Prime Real Estate Goes to New Dinosaur at the Smithsonian

The beloved dinosaur exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, will soon be closing for an extensive redesign.  The fossil hall where the Smithsonian’s dinosaur collection is on display will be closing on April 28, 2014 for a complete renovation and new design.  The $48 million project is expected to take 5 years to complete, and the new exhibit won’t reopen to the public until 2019.

At the center of the new fossil hall will be a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton where it will be on a 50-year loan from the Army Corps of Engineers.  The dinosaur fossil was discovered in Montana in 1988, and is considered one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever discovered.

The dinosaur bones are expected to arrive at the Smithsonian, on National Fossil Day (April 15).  Visitors can get a glimpse of the future centerpiece of the exhibit.  A cast of the new exhibit’s Tyrannosaurs skull is now on display in the Constitution Avenue lobby of the Natural History Museum.

If you can’t make it to the museum in time to see the current dinosaur exhibit before it closes for renovation don’t worry.  The Smithsonian will still continue to display dinosaurs and fossils through several other exhibits.

The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is the largest and most visited natural history in the world.  Each year, over 7 million visitors come from around the globe to view and study many of the 127 million artifacts and specimens, including those in the dinosaur hall. If you live in the area, plan on visiting, or have family and friends visiting prior to the end of April 2014 and enjoy looking at dinosaurs, a visit to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is a must.

The Natural History Museum is conveniently located at the corner of 10th St. & Constitution Ave NW, in Washington, DC, and is just down the street from the Smithsonian Station Metro stop (Mall exit).  The museum is open every day except December 25 from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and admission is always free.

**This is just a public service announcement to let you know about this as I would hate to come visit the area only to find out I couldn't see the dinosaurs in the Natural History Museum.
