A comment on an ActiveRain blog:
"... there's a term for going to your own site and leaving comments...sock puppet. There have been a couple of famous cases of people posing as someone else and praising themselves all over the Internet. Although you CAN do it, you're better off asking your friends and clients to visit your sites and leave comments. Like this one. "

I never knew that... I did not know that was being a sock puppet.
I remember reading about the CEO of Whole Foods doing just that. Using a pseudonym to comment during negotiations with Wild Oats Market. I never heard the term "sock puppet" for what he was doing though... or if I did it went right over my head.
"A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an Internet community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of an Internet community speaks while pretending not to, like a puppeteer manipulating a hand puppet.
I remember the sock puppet for Pets.com fondly:
A medley of Pets.com TV Commercials
I know CT real estate blogger and photographer, Athol Kay uses a sock puppet on his blog... and I believe when he comments on other blogs in the real estate blogosphere he signs it "sock puppet." I don't know Athol. I've read Athol Kay's blog before... but I never got the "sock puppet" thing... what a difference it makes reading this knowing what a "sock puppet" is.
Sock Puppet: Point and Counterpoint Edit September 2011 link was going to a site in a foreign language. German? Hijacked? Who knows. I broke the link.
One of the anonymous bubble bloggers uses a sock puppet too... duh! not that I read any bubble blogs much...
How could you all know this and not tell me? What other lingo is going right over my head?
