Sock Puppet

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

A comment on an ActiveRain blog:

"... there's a term for going to your own site and leaving comments...sock puppet. There have been a couple of famous cases of people posing as someone else and praising themselves all over the Internet. Although you CAN do it, you're better off asking your friends and clients to visit your sites and leave comments. Like this one. "

by Dave Roberts

I never knew that... I did not know that was being a sock puppet.

I remember reading about the CEO of Whole Foods doing just that. Using a pseudonym to comment during negotiations with Wild Oats Market. I never heard the term "sock puppet" for what he was doing though... or if I did it went right over my head.

Wikipedia on sockpuppet

"A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an Internet community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of an Internet community speaks while pretending not to, like a puppeteer manipulating a hand puppet.

I remember the sock puppet for Pets.com fondly:

A medley of Pets.com TV Commercials

I know CT real estate blogger and photographer, Athol Kay uses a sock puppet on his blog... and I believe when he comments on other blogs in the real estate blogosphere he signs it "sock puppet." I don't know Athol. I've read Athol Kay's blog before... but I never got the "sock puppet" thing... what a difference it makes reading this knowing what a "sock puppet" is.

Sock Puppet: Point and Counterpoint Edit September 2011 link was going to a site in a foreign language. German? Hijacked? Who knows. I broke the link.

One of the anonymous bubble bloggers uses a sock puppet too... duh! not that I read any bubble blogs much...

How could you all know this and not tell me? What other lingo is going right over my head?

find anyone's earliest AR post by going to the archive at the bottom of their AR sidebar and finding the first month... it is garbled...  I am not sure why AR archives aren't in order.

I joined in August 2006  mine is  August 2006 (23)  then if you click on that link it is the bottom link in the list... mine is something like "ooops I did it again.  Active Rain is blogging"  I did not know what ActiveRain was when I joined.  I had been blogging for a year but did not have a clue what social networking was, or much at all about web 2.0 or social media.  I joined and invited all my blogging buddies (that's why I have so many points on AR) and then realized it was another place to blog.  Duh!

Maureen - First of all, not "Duh" at all.  Second of all,  what you wrote in your comments was great.

It puts this whole issue in a different light.  And you know what?  It makes me feel a little better as well.

To switch topics, what awards have you received so far?  Is it for amount of hits, readership, quality?

I really am curious.

blogging is not a competitive sport with awards really... I was one of the bloggers that Sellsius blog named one of the top 10 women real estate bloggers in 2006, just based on their opinion... that's the extent of my blogs award wining.  It's totally subjective.

I think looking at BlogToplist.com in the real estate category is the best measurement, but not all people submit their blogs....

Maureen- I went and it was interesting.  Maybe I didn't see all the tools.  But I had to go through the whole list of Realty blogs to find yours.  Today it was #122.

I checked it out and boy, you write a lot.  Every day.

The part that really intrigued me was the Market Reports.  Especially where you talked about Active Rain.  The whole part about being harassed and having 'dirty tricks' thrown your way.

Elaborate?  It sounded like a good story.

Good job, you can be proud of the award.  You certainly sounded very excited when you wrote about it.

Maureen, the term "sock puppet" was familiar to me after I began on the BB's in early 2000. There were several, it appeared, and after a time the people who had been there the longest could spot them. I don't see much of it on AR (I look around at lots of different blogs on AR) so that's good.

Once responses get to be a large number, I don't bother reading them all. Otherwise it's fun to see what people are saying! Not a fan of hijacking, as that also can be a problem on BB's. If a topic is that interesting that a blog is hijacked, then hey - start another blog, huh? :)

Real Estate Blogs - Blog Top Sites -MY AR blog... I have it on my other two blogs too...

The scores  fluctuate up and down based on traffic.

Look at the top real estate blogs though if you want to know what it takes to get lots of traffic.  Number one is a bubble blog...

#20 Phoenix Real Estate Guy - Jay Thompson

#25 Seattle Condos And Lofts Blog - Ben Kakimoto

#28 South Beach Real Estate Blog - Kevin Tomlinson

#39 miOaklandCounty - Maureen Francis

Look at Kevin's blog he was one of the blog apprentices last summer for the "competition" on ActiveRain.

Gina ... what other words don't I know?

There are a few fake id's used on ActiveRain.

I stop reading a thread usually when it is hijacked. IMHO it usually turns into uninteresting nonsense.

Maureen - nothing like getting an inferiority complex this early in the day.  What did I learn?  Do you do anything else all day (I assume besides selling property?).

Kevin's blog is extremely impressive.  He definitely put time and money in it.  But, and this is just me, he has become another slick snake-oil real estate blogger.  Your blogs have a real feeling to them.  Like it is YOU writing them (and not a couple of hired-on's).  Am I just so jaded?  To me his blog has as much integrity as the big check he is waiting to sell it for.  That is not to say that you would sell your blogs too.  That is the payoff, after all.

I got a nice response to my 'no turn' entry last night that kind of gave me hope again.  I am still debating whether to just give up.  Not that anybody would care, poor me I'll eat dirt and gummy worms.

You never answered the question about the 'drama.'  Maybe there is a lesson for me in there?

Oh yeah, Fake Id's.  One of my most consistent, psychotic flamers is Ben Dinster.  Let's see, no picture, no information.  He has called me a green Nazi.  How is that whole thing monitored?

This has now become your most commented blog at this point, huh? :)

I prewrite my posts and they are written with a formula that makes them take little time to write... something you learn to do as you blog.  I write locally.

I try not to judge blogs and bloggers and be respectful of everyone's efforts.  Kevin's is gorgeous, it was designed by Brad Carroll who is an AR member.  There was a lot of interesting comments last summer about all the blogs in the group of apprentices, lots of judging gong on...

drama?  I will have to go back and reread the thread to refresh my memory...

This my most commented blog? ActiveRain blogs get comments that other blogs, that may be the problem with ActiveRain for many people.

or this my most commented blog post?  I have over 100 comments on an October 2006 post on ActiveRain, I am not sure if that is the most commented that I have here or not.  I don't think running up comments on a post serves any purpose personally.

Is "Ben Dinster" you sock puppeting?

Maureen - No, Dinster is for real.  Check it out.

I meant most comments on the Real Living blog (this one, when you check 'most comments').  I know you have gotten more comments on other ones.  You took a whole bunch of your posts off that had lots of comments.

I still believe comments either make or break the post.  I probably will not read a post that has less than 3 comments (that and the date of the last...3rd...comment).  If it has a lot of comments....I will certainly not read the comments....but read the post since obviously something is going on there.

On the other hand, sometimes a discussion is brought about in a post, such as this one, that is really interesting and eye-opening.

Kevin's blog is very nice.  Why not judge?  There is something bread and butter(y) about down to earth posts and there is something 'corporate' about others.  Realtors do not have a particular trustworthy image at the moment.  I am not sure which approach works better psychologically.

My father always told me to judge other people by the way their car looked.  Didn't matter  if it was a late model.  But was it clean (outside and inside)?  Well kept?  To him it said so much.

I'd rather open the hood and take a look inside.

Anyway, this has been a very good experience for me.

Hi Dougles,

If this is the thread you were referring to, I'm sorry if I stirred up any misunderstanding.  Not all anonymous posts are sock puppets.  I hope you can let it go at this point.  As I just mentioned in my previous response to you, when I register on Active Rain I will call Maureen and introduce myself so we can all put that thought to rest.  Now I do have to run.  Our dogs need to be walked and I've been sitting at this computer too long today!

Hi Douglas,

Sorry about the typo.  I was hurrying and that leads to mistakes.  Now, if had called you DougLESS, then that would have been intentional.  Have a great weekend.  By the way, there's one good thing that will come out of this conversation.  Now that you have my attention, I'm going to start reading your green info.  Sounds interesting.
