Community Involvement Helps All

By Tom Pino

  • Recently I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, an organization that states its mission as “a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry… (that) seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.” Families that purchase the homes with affordable loans must meet certain requirements, the labor is provided by volunteers and materials are mostly donated. But the one thing that was most apparent to me at the site and is the camaraderie of all involved. More than thirty volunteers partnered with the couple who will be living in this modest, to build this 1000 square foot house.
  •  Some volunteers working along side Ft. Bend Professional Inspector
  • What struck me most at the construction site of this home was to see all the volunteers happily putting in their heart and sweat to what ever they were assigned. The willingness of everyone there to lend a helping hand, be it nailing of hurricane straps or helping place the trusses in place was apparent. It was heartwarming to witness the cooperation of all the volunteers, some of whom barely know how to pick up a hammer and nail. They were bankers, tellers, waiters, students, teachers, housewives, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers and many other non-construction professionals. Everyone was assigned a task and a responsibility that needed to get done, no questions asked, and everyone was doing it simply to help and out of the goodness of their heart.
  • Although most of us didn’t know each other, after a while many began to realize that I am a professional home inspector and that I also have quite a bit of experience in the house building industry. From that point on, I was asked all kinds of questions throughout the day. One example was during the installation of double pane windows. The supervisor did not realize that a flashing should be in placed on the supporting plate or rough sill prior to placement of the window itself. It took about 10 to 15 minutes for a team of two volunteer women to place the rubberized flashing around the twelve to fifteen windows.
  •  Pacement of the truss system
  • This house, when done, in about 4 to 6 weeks, will accommodate a family of six along with a mother-in-law. It is very gratifying at the end of the day to see that everything that needed to be done on that day was accomplished by a volunteer group.
  • I personally want to thank Saint Lawrence Roman Catholic Church and Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity for allowing me to be a part of this community effort. Not only was it a gratifying experience for me personally but I was also happy to be able to use my experience to help other volunteers in need of some direction in construction.
  • The family that will be living in this house will never forget that it was built through love, effort and labor of the local Church, School, Bank and community. Another new house was recently finished directly next door. I volunteered representing The Fort Bend Chapter of Texas Association of Real Estate Inspectors, and will be inspecting this and many other houses in the weeks and months to come.
  • New House just finished
  • To find Habitat for Humanity in your community go to www.habitatforhumanity.org. There are plenty of sites throughout Texas where you can volunteer a weekend or two a month. I can tell you from experience that it is a great way to make a difference in your community… and in yourself! God Bless and be happy!
