To Ensure Payment

I do this as a side job to keep me occupied and have adult interaction since I am at home with the kids all day long. I absolutely love my job and will continue to do this as the work is out there. I am bad for allowing my payments to sit on my books for months and months, some even longer than 6.  I have now realized, that more than not, my payments are not coming because the company doesn't have a W-9 on file. What an easy fix..... I now send an invoice to the hiring company and even though it isn't requested, I send a W-9 along with it. So far, my current months have been paid and paid promptly. It is an extra step, but it may save others from the problems of collections if they do the same.

Hi Michele,

I didn't find out about this until just recently, and sure wish I had known I could do this before sending all these signing services my social security number.  In case you don't know, whenever you sign up with a signing service and have to send a W-9, it's much safer to use an employer identification number (EIN) instead of your social security number.

You can apply as a sole proprietor and can easily get an EIN by mail, telephone, fax or online. I applied online and got one right away.  You can also get the application form at your local Social Security Office, or by calling the IRS at 1-800-829-3676.  To apply online, to to www.irs.gov.

You never want to send your Soc Security number to anyone.

Who knows who is taking our fax back application off the fax machine?  I am not suggesting we have a bunch of "bad apples" in our industry but a lot of identity theft happens internally.

Hi Michelle,

Quickbooks has a program in which you can track payments and outstanding invoices...I use it and found it helpful in keeping track of monies owed, it records mileage, etc.  It is a very helpful tool for tax season as well...
