Staging FAQ’s- Palm Beach County -What Am I Supposed to Do With All of this Stuff?

Oh, sure, it’s easy for me to suggest to my clients that they edit what they have but Staging FAQthen what are they supposed to do with everything?

That’s a good question and one that Sellers ask stagers and their agents.

So, where do you put everything?

1.  If there are items that your adult children will want, you might consider passing them along now.

One of my clients placed all of her Lladro and silver on her dining room table and asked her children over.  They were instructed to take what they wanted now.  After that, she gave some to her friends, and then sold the rest on eBay.

2.  Get the opinion of a professional.

I have no idea what that antique desk you have is worth, but there are antique consignment shops and other outlets that will give you some idea.  If you have large pieces, take photos of them and take them in.  Some will come out to your home to give you an estimate.

We have consignment shops and other businesses who will assist you in selling your items.  Just know that each one is different and will charge you a fee.  Also know that most will require that you arrange to get your pieces to them.

3.  Faith Farm Ministries-Boynton Beach

This is a favorite place for not only donating items, but also for those who love to seek out those special finds that were previously owned by others.   And, here’s what I love… they will come out and pick up your donation.

Faith Farm funds approximately 94% of its $11 million yearly budget through the work projects of the students.    It is not just about tackling the addiction but also educating the students.

Store it4. eBay

You may not want or need certain items anymore but trust me,, there are those out in Cyberspace who do.  Why not let someone else enjoy your treasures and make some money as well?

5. Rent a storage facility.

It seems as if we have off-site storage facilities on every block in Palm Beach County.  Each one will have different prices even if they are part of the same franchise.  Keep in mind, most rent by the month.

* one note… please, no dumpsters in the driveways!  Not the kind of curb appeal that will attract buyers.

6. Call in the Expert!

Even a pro knows when to call in the expert in their area.  While I work to give my clients a plan of attack that they can carry out, often they need the assistance of an organizational expert.  For Palm Beach County, I call Trudy Fellows, owner of Clear the Clutter.

Trudy will take care of everything for you, and that includes, organizing your move, selling your items on eBay for you, packing, unpacking, arranging for storage, holding an Estate Sale for you, and much more.

If you’ve been told to edit or “declutter” but just don’t know what to do with everything, consider the above options to help prepare your house for the market.

Kathy, great compilation here! Do you have a Habitat for Humanity in your area as well? They will pick up some things as well, like appliances, and other things that are in GOOD SHAPE, to be put into a home for someone less fortunate than your seller.

Kathy, very good advice for getting rid of items no longer needed. Do you not recommend those POD containers in the driveway?

John- read your post on Craigslist!  Loved it.

Debbie- I agree, however, renting on a month to month, just until your house sells, will help sellers edit what they have so their house can be seen.  So often they have extra furniture for their next housebut it's eating up space in the house they're trying to sell.

Clint- oh yes, it's a great time to edit what you have.

Wayne- I think sellers just need a little help in figuring out what to do with their extra "stuff."

Lenn- Always the Salvation Army or any local place.   I agree... it's amazing what you can accumulate in just a short time.

Cindy- every agent I've spoken with when they contact me for a client tells me that!  It's all of the STUFF.

Gabe- you had it right the first time! LOL

Ann- and there are companies that will help you!

Dianne- monthly rentals for that purpose aren't that expensive and can help you get your house on the market sooner and sold!

Joe- whatever works as long as they're not in the driveway!

Sheila- you are always so kind!

Barbara Jo- thanks and I know you're enjoying your new grandbaby.

Cheryl- now that sounds like fun!

Silvia- that they do and what the heck do you do with them!

Dorie- there are Estate Sales as well if the home has a lot of collectibles.

Brad- exactly.  Houses are selling rather quickly now so why not invest in a unit to make sure you've done everything you can.

Gayle- good idea and yes we do.   Thanks for the "heads up" email!

Michael- very tacky and it totally distracts from the curb appeal, not to mention the fact that your neighbors aren't too happy about it.

Kristin- why pay to move what you don't want or need.

Kathy, great post! I agree,if the seller is going to use a pod it has to be taken off site and stored. They don't make good lawn ornaments LOL.

Kathy, these are great suggestions. I don't how sometimes we start with a modest amount of things and then everything seems to multiply by the time we want to move or downsize. Clearing the clutter is always necessary.

Conrad- well, I'll second that!

Janice- talk about a lawn ornament, it is just bad!

Patty- I don't know if you're familiar with Faith Farmbut they will come out and pick it up.

Jeffrey- were I an agent, I would have a list of the storage facilities near my listings.

Randy- thank you!

Jason- I appreciate that!  Thank you!

Phil-things just end up accumulating.

People don't often realize that their treasures may not come off as being treasures to others, especially when it comes to staging a home. I love your suggestions of how to downsize--there are some great options to pick from!

There are companies that will do tag sales. They can help get rid of unwanted items. I've also suggested getting a pod to put in items they will be moving. This will help them. Sometimes they feel if they put things in storage, they may need it. This solves that issue.

Awesome advice Kathy. Love the idea of the home organizer and that one that you recommend is worth her weight in gold. She does it all!

I tell clients to take a photo and put it on Craigslist. It will be gone shortly. If nobody wants to buy it, then put it on Craigslist free to the first person to get over by noon.

Kathy  -- Elizabeth #32 gave the same advice I was going to. I actually did that a few years back. Was getting new furniture and didn't want to lift/move the old out. So I just posted a pic on Craigslist and told the first caller (followed by many others) to get over quickly and take it. They were here within an hour and the job was done. You have provided all excellent solutions.

Yeah I'm dealing with the dilemma of "big plant, small room". You should see this plant, it's as if it has it's own special room. I can seem to get it outta there. And with it being winter right now it would die on the porch or patio. This plant has become my nemesis. I need a place where they will babysit your plant while your away or selling your home. Good article.
