Searcy First United Methodist Church. Really old picture that was used for stereoscopic viewing.

Methodist Church

Melanie Murphy from Judsonia shared several steroscopic images that were given to her because of her love for history.  The images were made for viewing through a telescopic viewer so they were double images.

This one of the First United Methodist is a great one.  Google says the 3-D stereocards were popular from the 1850's to the 1930's.

Here we took one side off and uploaded a higher resolution picture (scroll across to see it all) and you can see the great detail in the photograph.  Notice the wood sidewalk.  Looks as if the gentleman is carrying an umbrella.  Perhaps some of the Searcy Sleuths will be able to tell us what the background shows.

Thanks, Melanie Murphy.

I seem to remember reading sometime that there was a cemetary by the First Methodist Church. When the Searcy Methodists Anita and Harold wake up maybe we will learn more.

Here's a blowup of the side. Looks like a mausoleum structure at back.

Don, if it had been a cemetery, they'd have had to move all the graves!  Wonder where they went?

This was taken before any of the "wings" were added to make the "cross shaped" sanctuary we knew growing up in the church. I didn't realize that they were later additions. I don't recall ever hearing of a cemetery next to the church but it sure wouldn't surprise me as that was common when the church was built. I had an uncle who worked pipelines in Louisiana. He told me that the official way to move a cemetery was to dig down a foot or so and take a shovel of dirt, put on a box and rebury the box somewhere else. No attempt was made to move the coffin or body. I always thought that sounded strange but he claimed to have been involved in several cemetery relocations during his pipeline days.

If y'all are seeing a cemetery, you're seeing something I don't see. Having said that, I do have ripening cataracts, and never have had a good eye for photos! We'll have to consult some older than we are 'historian/Sleuths for this one. I have someone in mind.

Harold Gene, that is a fascinating story and really makes you wonder if that is true.  Imagine someone deciding to excavate behind the church to see if there are any remains from a past cemetery.  Interesting!

Anita, call the person that you have in mind.  But don't you like the picture?

Yes, I do love the picture. I love that church! Grew up attending that church....was married there and so was our son. It holds many memories for me. I've always thought it was one of the most beautiful churches I was ever in. I love it's size: not too large. Love the pews. Shall I go on? Love the stained glass windows.

I loved it more before the remodel where some of the beautiful dark woodwork was replaced with the light color woodwork. Seemed like what resulted was a Hodge-podge of styles.

Yes, Anita, we understand the love you have for the church.  But what was BEHIND the church at the time of this picture?

Harold Gene, I think it is prettier outside than inside and that might be because of the changes that you report they have made.

Here's some history of the church.

In 1851, Searcy’s first Methodist church, then a log cabin, was erected on its present plot and became Searcy’s first established church. - See more here.

1877 First United Methodist Church was erected at Main and Market (still stands.) More here.

Church before steeple was installed. Notice the trees have been cleared in the pic above.

In 1928 the church had about 500 members. I found no reference to a cemetary in any of the material I have read.
