13 Mind Blowing Facts About Social Media

and a couple other tidbits

social media

The primary questions I get when speaking about Social Media are centered around why someone should use social media as part of their marketing plan. Typically the questions come from agents who are in their 50s or older and perceive social media as pointless and silly. I have compiled a few of the reasons below:

  1. 60% of Google+ users login at least once a day.
  2. 23% of Facebook users check their account 5 times per day.
  3. 4.2 Billion people access Social Media sites via mobile.
  4. 189 Million Facebook users are mobile only.
  5. 2 New members join LinkedIn every second.
  6. 58 Million tweets are sent every day.
  7. The +1 button is used 5 Billion times every day.
  8. 2,083 Foursquare check-ins are performed every minute.
  9. 1 out of every 7 minutes online are spent on Facebook.
  10. 91% of mobile internet usage is for Social Media.
  11. 16 Billion photos have been uploaded to Instagram, 5 Million every day.
  12. If Social Media sites were countries, Facebook (with 1.1 Billion users) would be the 2nd largest country behind China. Google+ would be 3rd with 693 Million and Twitter would be 4th with 544 Million...
  13. YouTube has 1 Billion unique visitors and reaches the 18 - 34 year old demographic more than any cable network.

With that many users and that much usage how can you justify not joining the conversation that is happening there?

A few interesting stats about the male vs. female ratio for the various Social Media sites:

  • Facebook - 60% female vs. 40% male
  • Twitter - 60% female vs. 40% male
  • Pinterest - 79% female vs. 21% male
  • Google+ - 29% female vs. 71% male
  • LinkedIn - 55% female vs. 45% male

Also keep in mind that 46% of people look towards social media before making large purchases and personal decisions.

Kevin - These facts are really interesting.  I wonder what activities are no longer happening as a result of all this social media. - Debbie

Debbie, I think it is more that our fast paced, multitasking society has evolved somewhat and we are now communicating and engaging via social media as we are doing other things. One study showed that upwards of 60% of people were now engaging on social media while watching TV and the same number were engaging on social media while working.
