Open House or Open Pocketbook?
You are selling your home and of course you want it to look attractive and tempting to a potential buyer. However, sometimes that attraction is also luring in thieves, looking for homes that have valuable and sell-able items. Open houses are great marketing tools, but they also expose your home and family to countless strangers and possible burglars. It is important to keep in mind that not every person attending an open house is a potential home-buyer. Security must be a focus when staging your home. Below are some simple security tips for open-houses; ensuring safety for both your family and your belongings.
1. Hide valuables - Lock-boxes are recommended for valuables such as jewelry, cash, firearms and all prescription medication. Remember that large valuables are included here, such as high-priced artwork and expensive electronics.
2. Keep paperwork out of site - Identity theft is a common problem. All bills, credit cards, heath insurance information and anything else containing personal information such as social security numbers and bank account numbers should be hidden well.
3. Protect children's identities - Take note of children's names on the wall or any other decorative item or photo and remove if possible.
4. Keep house well lit and conduct frequent walk-throughs - Be sure to keep inside and outside walkways and hallways well lit and free of clutter. Also, try to take thorough walk-throughs of your house as much as you can, making sure all doors and windows are locked and no items are missing.
