Jefferson County,Co deputy killed in car collision.

Today, we mourn Sergeant David Baldwin who was killed when his police motorcycle was struck head-on by another vehicle in Jefferson County Colorado. The funeral is today and there is an  expected  approximatly 5000 attendees.

Today’s Funeral of a great Sheriff, should bring attention to the limitation of senior driving. The other vehicle attempted to illegally pass a third vehicle on a double-yellow line when he struck Sergeant Baldwin. The driver of the other vehicle was 83 years old.

This accident brings attention to the discussion on driving abilities of Senior Drivers. Please do not take it wrong, they are great people, yet some of them should not be driving. Lord willing, we all, will someday be faced with the question “ At my age, should I be driving”?  . Perhaps our legislators need to look at yearly driving test for seniors over the age of 70.

Perhaps you know of a senior that needs to consider continuing to drive. Perhaps you can have a good discussion with that senior. AARP in conjunction with The Hartford Company have a great booklet available  “We need to talk ...Family conversations with older drivers. The booklet brings up good topic for the discussion. This is a vital discussion , the life you save may be your own and or a love one.

People need to honestly rate their driving ability. There are plenty of young drives that don't need to be on the road.

I blogged about taking away a senior drivers keys about 3 weeks back.  Hard thing to do and most don't want to give up their freedom.

My wife and I call it DWO.  Driving while old.  So many elderly people drive too slow or simply mis calculate when they drive.

My sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of your Sheriff.

My cousin Lillian was featured on "Inside Edition".  America's oldest driver, at age 101 years of age!

Today Cousin Lillian is 107 (or 108?); she lives in assisted living and no longer drives.
