Have you ever wondered where to go to hear free live concerts in Richmond Virginia? One suggestion is to try some free performances offered by the University of Richmond Music Department. In fact, yesterday afternoon acclaimed Pianist Richard Becker played a series of outstanding piano pieces at Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music.

Initially, Becker prefaced his performance by telling the audience from the podium on stage about some of Walt Whitman's poem fragments. As a composer and Coordinator of Piano Studies at UR, Becker began the program by performing some of his own pieces interpreting three different fragments of poetry by Whitman.
At the top of the page above three Whitman fragments inspired Becker's original work.
What also was so amazing about these performances is that all of them were recited. Absolutely no sheet music was read as Becker played his various interesting and often complex pieces. Other than his original work above (and an improvisional piece he performed at the end not shown on the program), this world-class pianist performed piano pieces by Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt.
As shown above, Becker has been cited by The New York Times and performed on NPR.
