Carlsbad, The Bike Friendly Town
I have renamed Carlsbad the bike friendly town.
It’s my own doing, but based on changes in the last couple of years which reflect that Carlsbad takes toward bicyclists I thinks it’s an apt descriptor.
Carlsbad is certainly not alone. There are many communities that promote bicycling and provide an atmosphere that encourage that mode of transportation, and safety for the bikers in a busy community with a fair amount of traffic and pedestrians.
Case in point…
Carlsbad has been installing sharrows for some time, and many streets are designated streets which are to be shared by bicyclists and cars (indicated by the photo to the right).
Carlsbad has had labeled bike lanes as long as I have lived here on a number of major streets, including the coast highway (Carlsbad Boulevard) along the beach.
The City of Carlsbad has also installed a large number of bike racks and bike corrals around and near the village and by the beaches in the last couple of years, encouraging bicyclists to “bike the village.”
It cuts down on traffic congestion and the City's approach acknowledges the need for bicyclists to share the road, and be able to park and use the services in the Village.
It's an expensive, and healthy way to get around. Plus there are a large number of cyclists in an around the area, those who live here and others who are passing through.
I think all this makes Carlsbad a pretty bike friendly town.
