Have You Ever Seen A Raccoon Dog?

I can honestly say that I've never even HEARD of a raccoon dog (or Tanuki) until two days Raccoon Dog?ago when I believe one passed very casually in front of my living room window. It was a nice casual weekend morning as hubby and I were sitting by the main window sipping our coffee when this huge thing walked by.

At first I thought it was a Raccoon, but it was much fatter and had a pointier nose. It's tail was also ringless...but then again, it could have been cut off. So I searched online and typed in "raccoon like animal" and sure enough, there is actually such an animal called a "raccoon dog". Who new?

Sadly, if this is one, according to Wikipedia, they are highly hunted and prized for their fur and often skinned alive for their fur that's passed off and other types of fur. Now that is sick!

Now, I will apologize for the pictures having glare, but it was a sunny morning and I didn't want to open my doors so it would run off without be catching a pic or two. I only wish I was fast enough with my camera to get the face as it walked in front of us. I just would love to know how a raccoon dog from eastern asia ended up in Milwaukie Oregon.

Is that a bench in the last pic Cindy? All I kept thinking was, good thing you weren't enjoying your morning cup of coffee outside.

No, I've never seen or even heard of a raccoon dog (or bear?) before.

I have never heard of them.  Now I'm off to see where all they live.

Hi Andrea, It's a chair...and I'd like to think it wouldn't have walked by if we were outside! It does look fat and bearlike..which makes me believe it's not a basic raccoon since they are a bit thinner.

Interesting but are they actually in the US?

Tammy, this is a first for me! If it IS one, then I need to look up in the trees as apparently they climb them.

Hi Cindy, I can't find any info on them in the US...which makes me believe it might be something else...but boy, it sure does look like one.

Cindy, you just opened up a whole new world for me! The only canine to hibernate--that and all of the other valuable info in that video was quite fascinating--though, as you know me, I am saddened by how mistreated they are...like MANY who are prized for their fur only.

How urban/remote are you?

If you have a local wildlife center close by take the photo to them and they might be able to tell you.

Hi Gayle, thank you! I didn't even try to get rid of the glare lines. Not that remote at all which is why it was interesting that it just walked by our window during the day. We are along the Willamette River though.

Hi Cindy, that's a great idea. The logical says they are not in the US and this is just a very fat different kind of raccoon...but then again....

Hmm, never heard of a raccoon dog either. Suppose someone could of had it as a pet and then released it......

I had never heard of a racoon dog, either. Like Myrl, it makes me think of a small bear. You're close to nature now in your new digs!

You do have some unusual sights in Oregon, don't you? I would have been scared.

Raccoon dog? Half dog and half raccoon? Ha! Interesting. I had never heard of a raccoon dog either.

But it so sad that these animals are skinned alived for fur. I found a super pitiful photo of raccoon dogs. Alive but helpless. Its so sick and so upsetting.

Cindy,It looks like a very well fed raccoon to me with a longer snout. But I always like learning something new and I will go with your declaration of this being a raccoon dog.

Hi Than, I don't think they'd make good pets...so maybe

Hi Myrl, Not sure if this is indeed one....seems odd for the area, but it sure does look like one!

Hi Lottie, We are along the river, but not a likely place you'd see something like this so up close to the house in the morning.

Hi Peter, I had never heard of the raccoon dog until I stumbled upon it when searching to see what this was. Better than a bear!

Hi Jill, I wasn't too scared...just shocked that it was just so very casual walking along the front of the house.

Hi Eric, VERY sad that they kill them for the fur.

Hi Debbie, sigh...you're probably right, but it would be cool if it were indeed a raccoon dog!

They sure are beautiful. At first, I thought the snout looked a bit like a bear. Very pretty. The video made me sad.
