CVS Stores - No More Tobacco Products!

Real Estate Agent with Shahar Management

I was watching the news last night and heard that the CVS Drugstore ChainCVS Stopping Selling Tobacco Products which happens to be the country's largest, is going to stop selling tobacco products.  Kudos to them for taking the step that everyone else has been afraid to take!  Yes, they believe it will bring them more business in the end but isn't going the way of a more healthful store what we want for our kids and grand kids anyway?

I myself have never been a smoker but have seen people I care about succumb to lung disease and other illnesses directly related to the use of tobacco products.  I have a friend having a lung transplant tomorrow.  Did these people have a choice?  Absolutely, however as most of the smokers know once you start it is almost impossible for some people to stop, in fact millions across the world can't stop no matter how hard they try.

So to CVS Drugstores...whatever your motive I salute you!  If it isn't in front of the teens and young adults when they are shopping maybe it won't be in their mind to start.  It has to start somewhere or it will always be in front of them enticing them to try....

Debra, I heard that on the news as well, and kudos to CVS for taking this step!  It just isn't necessary to ever start smoking as it has so many harmful effects on oneself and others around them.

I was in a hospital bed next to an older man dying of emphsema and it was horrible to listen to that poor man fighting for every breath!  It was so bad at nights I just took my tree stand with the IV's and slept in the lounge!!!!!

I'm thrilled that CVS is taking this approach.  It's a bold move, but I think in the long run they will be rewarded.

Hi Debra, this is a huge step taken by the CVS Drugstore chain. Good for them, I'm sure the public will reward them with more people coming into the store to support them.

Debbie, personally I don't see that it will help or hurt CVS bottom line over all. People will simply go where they need to go to purchase tobacco products and they'll still go to CVS for their other needs.  CVS will lose tobacco revenue, but beyond that I really don't see an impact

I think it will be a big loss initially as they said it was $2 billion a year I believe.  But it will be made up in other ways.

If one professes to be a drugstore that heals then selling cigarettes is a complete conflict of interes.

So many people are saying it is not a big deal - but I think that we have lost sight of what it means to take a stand. I appreciate a corporate culture that stands up for something right.

While this is a bold step for CVS, and from the comments many commend them for this move. I agree with them to a degree, but wonder like a few have said that people will just go buy at another store.

One point, if they are being so health conscious, maybe they should also consider removing all of the many racks of " Junk Foods and Candies"........just a thought.

Thanks for the post.

Michael - I agree!

Wayne - I think there will be more and more "drugstores" following suit.  It is just a matter of who will be next?

That's good news for your area! I'll have to check the next time I go to CVS or Walgreens to see if they are still selling tobacco in TX. I'm all for banning tobacco. I've never been a smoker and I saw what it did to my husband. He died of brain cancer from lung cancer that metastasized to his brain. He was a smoker.

Here in TX, I've noticed more and more Smoke Shops popping up and I find that disturbing.

Pat - I believe it is supposed to take effect in September of this year.  I see the same thing around here and I agree with you.  Sorry about your husband...I have seen many with lung cancer as well and it is definitely not pleasant.
