For Arizona's Widowed and Disabled

Arizona widowed or disabled real estate and property owners have a state tax exemption that is not publicly advertised.   Through this little-known exemption, personal property and/or real estate may be substantially reduced to ease the cost of ownership for those in need.

If you know of any Aizona person who is widowed or disabled, please share this information with them, as not many are aware of this exemption.  My widow neighbors both benefited in the reduction of their real estate taxes, not just one year, but as long as they are eligible.

According to Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) 42-11111, widows, widowers, or disabled persons may be eligible for a tax exemption if these qualifications are met:

  • You must be a resident of Arizona.
  • Total assessed valuation in Arizona must not exceed $24,900 for the 2014 tax year. This amount is indexed and changes each year. Contact our office at 602-506-3406 after January 1st of each year for the actual amount.
  • Total income from all sources, excluding social security, cannot exceed $30,536**.
  • If children under 18 years of age or disabled children reside in the household, income cannot exceed $36,643**.
  • Disability must be total and permanent and certified by a licensed physician on form DOR82514B.

Qualified persons may obtain the application and filing instructions through this website:

Application may be submitted at any Arizona county assessor's office.  The eligibility and exemption are reviewed and revised regularly.
