When it comes to fitness there are many choices, but only martial arts offers a workout for your body, as well as your mind. Imperial Martial Arts believes that developing and maintaining a sound body and mind are critical to getting the most out of life. For the past 25 years, Imperial Martial Arts has been building strong students, both mentally and physically.
As Broward County's longest running Martial Arts program, Imperial Martial Arts has been in continuous operation since 1982. It was founded by Grand Master Gus Alvarez and his wife, Master Carmen Alvarez. The couple still takes a hands-on approach to teaching. Perhaps this is why the school has been so successful for so long, graduating hundreds of black belts over the years. This is quite an accomplishment when you consider the rigorous requirements of becoming a black belt.
Today, Imperial Martial Arts is owned and operated by Grand Master and Master Alvarez and their partner, Bob Rovin, who also serves as Program Director. "Combined we have almost 75 years of experience between the three of us," states Rovin. All three are advanced black belts. "I am a 2nd degree black belt, Master Alvarez is a 7th degree and Mrs. Alvarez is a 5th degree black belt."
All instructors at Imperial Martial Arts are black belts. "They're all home-grown, having received their black belt from Master Alvarez," explains Rovin. He says this allows the studio to ensure that each class is being taught to Imperial Martial Arts' strict standards. Perhaps this is why the studio has been voted Best Martial Arts program in Weston for the past three years.
"One of the things that has made us so successful over the years is our emphasis on teaching children focus, self-control and discipline," boasts Rovin. "Martial arts bring out the best in students both physically and academically."
Rovin says the skills learned at Imperial Martial Arts carry over into the classroom and other activities. "We, without a doubt, see an increase in grades and decrease in behavioral issues with our students," states Rovin. "My greatest pleasure is when parents tell us that their child's teacher in noticing changes in the student or that their child is better behaved at home. That's what makes it all worthwhile as an instructor."
He notes that martial arts also bring out the best in students physically. "It's a great workout. It's good for strengthening, flexibility, hand-eye coordination and mind-body balance." According to Rovin, his students often improve in other sports as a result of martial arts.
Because it's so stimulating both mentally and physically, many adults enroll in martial arts classes. "It definitely improves concentration and reduces stress, but for many adults the emphasis is on fitness," says Rovin. Not only do martial arts increase strength and flexibility, but it is a wonderful workout. "We have one student who has been training with us for four years. He lost 60 pounds and now no longer needs blood pressure medicine."
Imperial Martial Arts' core curriculum is Tae Kwon Do. "Our base program is Tae Kwon Do, but we do incorporate various martial arts styles into our program to create a well-rounded martial artist capable of defending themselves in realistic situations," states Rovin. The studio also offers a program in Jiu-Jitsu as well as classes in Mixed Martial Arts for adults and teens incorporating stand-up techniques, take downs and ground fighting skills."
Imperial Martial Arts offers programs for all ages. Getting started is as easy as enrolling in their 30-day free trial membership. Once enrolled, the studio is so sure its students will be satisfied that it offers a 30-day money back guarantee. "We are the only school that I am aware of that offers a money-back guarantee," says Rovin. He gives each prospective student an introductory private lesson before they register.
The majority of Imperial Martial Arts' students are enrolled in the Black Belt Leadership Program, an all-inclusive plan which provides unlimited classes. "We sell an education not a block of time," explains Rovin. "The course does not expire until the student achieves their Black Belt. Students work at their own pace to advance through the various belt levels."
