Wacky Winter thoughts

By
Real Estate Agent with United Country Ponderosa Realty, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Like many across the nation, people in Northern Colorado have been going about their day to day lives in spite of the frigid cold weather this past week.

Temperatures have been BELOW ZERO for days. One of my friends in Greeley said “…are we in the freaking Arctic???”

I don’t know, perhaps some evil force is at work and in fact we have been transported into another dimension that looks exactly like the one we knew except colder –arctic, bitter, numbing,  freezing, polar,  seeps through every bit of you  bone chilling colder.

Play theme from Twilight Zone here..

A good case could be made that watching the Twilight Zone as a child just makes you think weird thoughts,   but if we’re going to be transported to another dimension -why not a warmer one, say, like Costa Rica or Florida?!!!

All silliness aside, I talked to a seller client yesterday, who actually IS in Florida.  He has one of those monitoring systems that calls his phone when the indoor temperature in his Red Feather home drops below a certain degree.  He thought maybe the thermostats were turned down too low after the home inspection.

Of course, I went up there to take a look and called him back.  “It’s just very cold here”, I explained.  It can be challenging for the heaters to keep up with these arctic temperatures, I suppose. ‘No one there to light a fire in the wood burning stove either.

“Well,” he said, “I won’t even tell you what the weather is like here.”

Um no, please don’t tell me!

He was relieved his thermostats were set;   I was happy to help a client and realize that no evil supernatural force had taken over the climate,

because Florida, I assume, is WARM - Just as it should be!

Our weather is improving.

Homes are selling.

Life is good!

I can't imagine the kind of cold you and most of the country are experiencing. We freeze here in the 60s.

Hi Sharon, you will like the summers, and usually winter isn't THAT bad, but it has been unusually cold of late! You stay warm too!

Cheryl, do things stop in Charlotte with snow? My daughter used to live in Greensborough and said that one inch- and everyone stayed home.  Life is good, regardless :-)

Hi  Jane, I can imagine it would be cold at 60 degrees- I thought I would freeze to death in San Francisco at that temperature!  It must be the ocean air?  Well, I hope we warm up soon, is all I can say :-)

Mary - We had a few sub-zero days in early December, and this past week we were down to 11 below a few nights. Thankfully, it's warming up. We didn't dip below zero last night and today was up to 26.

For us, this is normal. There are always a few days of really uncomfortable temperatures. Thankfully, they haven't hung around like in other parts of the country. I can't imagine what we'd do if we had 40 below - but we did discuss it. We decided we'd have to put up a portable corral inside the shop for Mr. Horse. Right now he's managing with just a heavy blanket.

I really feel for all the animals - both wild and domestic.

Marte, I worry about the animals too-The wild animals seem to adapt better but nice to give Mr. Horse a blanket!  Oddly enough, when we lived in Gunnison it did get 40 below and didn't seem that cold- of course I was a lot younger and there was no wind or humidity, either.  I hope you continue to warm up and it looks like we are on a small warming trend too!

We have avoided much of the cold. Today it's raining...most of the day. I can't believe how much rain we are getting. How unusual for us, but Grand Mesa is getting hammered with snow. I guess it's closed to traffic. I hope you warm up.

Mary - I am sure glad we don't have the low temps here that you guys have.  The snow sure looks pretty but I don't want to live in it.  Keep warm.

Hi Mary, I think the real story here is the technology that alerted him to home temperature. I think this will become more and more common to know the condition of your home while away.

Debbie, rain? really that just seems odd doesn't it? I guess we are getting rain too...only it's frozen :-) The Grand Mesa is pretty high, so I'm not surprised that it's getting big snow! YAY! bring it- maybe we will end any notion of drought this year

Hi Jim, thanks, as it turns out it gets warmer when it snows- how strange is that?

Hi Bruce, I know, I don't know how people exist in such warm, unbearable conditions! I think he's lucky in more ways than one.. :-)

Hi Joan, it has been very cold- hopefully "HAS BEEN" being the operative words!

Hi William, isn't that a cool feature? It not only monitors temperature, but lets him know if the power goes out and when it comes back on.  Another client's security system saved his home when he accidently set in on fire. That kind of technology is well worth it.

I felt like putting on my pants while I was reading your post, LOL. I'm still in my PJs and all of that snow as making me chilly. I blame it on global warming. My sister says Minneapolis has been in a deep freeze too. It's not all that warm where I am but I'm not gonna say anything because by comparison . . . when I mentioned to my sister it was gloomy here in all of our rain, she just laughed with a hint of I want to clobber you in the undertone.

I'm glad you are getting rain Elizabeth- I sure don't like gloomy weather, it gets depressing without sunshine- which is why I think it should only rain at night LOL

Mary, weather aside, your post reminds me of a client who just called me from D.C.  He has a home here in Huntsville and said he turned the water off while away (makes sense if there was a leak), but the water department has sent him a bill each of the last two months for water usage of 2100 gallons.  After going to his home and checking from the top floor down to the crawl space...we determined the water company was just doing an estimated monthly read...nice work if you can get away with it!

Hi Nick, now that's not right! I hope your client gets his estimated water usage credited back to his account. Nice of you to provide the extra service for checking on it for him, too.

Hi Andrew, well I think changing markets would be an interesting exercise...on the day of this post I would've welcomed any place warmer- book me on that plane, where are my flip flops? find someone to help my clients when I'm away....I'm up for the challenge! :-)
