Olympia Area's Version of Snow

By
Industry Observer

Some winters in the Olympia area we move from cold enough to snow but no precipitation, to precipitation - but it has warmed up and comes down as rain.  Kids and kids at heart (not to mention ski enthusiasts) are often left wondering if the winter will EVER bring us some snow.

Well, Saturday night we got our snow - and more than forecast!  At our house Sunday morning, we had about 4.5".  Of course I had ventured out in my flip flops (don't judge) to try to lean over and measure, so hard telling how exact a measurement that was!  And, yes, I did shortly thereafter go dig out my boots from the depths of the closet and go out to run around with the dog & enjoy the white beauty of the trees and yard.

Feb 2014 snow in Olympia

In this area, a little snow brings everyone out to sled, make a snow man, have a snow ball fight - and quickly - since we know it may not stick around long (with my apologies to those areas of the country where snow has stayed well beyond its welcome!).

But, sure enough, the temperatures warmed up during the day, and rain started gently falling and washing away a good portion of the snow over night.  This morning our yard still had some snow in the grass and some slushy areas in the driveway, but my route to work was all bare and wet.  Kind of back to Olympia normal...

Still those quick moments to play in the snow were fun!!  And probably all the more fun knowing that the snow likely would soon be gone.

I hate to talk to people on the East Coast about our snow predicaments. I was north of Seattle and fought ever increasing snow as I headed south. I can't concentrate that long on my driving. (3 hours) f course I was wearing inappropriate shoes and had no coat so if either gotten stuck or in an accident I would've been out of luck...

Hi Paul - glad I'm not the only one who is in typical NW mode of inappropriate shoes & no coat - LOL.  And the snow really was fun to play in - less fun for driving!

I hear that my region is getting a storm on Thursday.  We'll see.  The ones that get super hyped by the talking heads are the ones that usually do nothing.

Nancy - The snow looked like it was fun while it lasted. There's always next time too.

Chris Ann - we see the same thing with the most talked about storms usually just kinda petering out. Of course if the forecast proves to be accurate, everyone is a little shocked!

Hi Jim - it WAS fun while it lasted, but I'm perfectly OK with being done with snow until next year. I'm looking forward to spring!
