Hidden Gems . . . Can't See the Forest For The Weeds

For many Buyers, they overlook the hidden gems found in property.  They look at the obvious, and in so doing, tend to overlook the diamonds in the rough.

Speaking of rough, landscaping is one of those hidden gems.  And, it is one of the least expensive ways to get the home to sparkle.

Since being a home owner at the young age of 19, I have been doing yard work for a number of years.  It's easy for me to see the overgrowth as a fun project.  With a supply of loppers, pruning shears, pole saw -- the garden hair cut begins.

My methods:

For bushes and shrubs -- just start at the level you want to cut back to.  Then just cut the thing back.  Easy.  Takes less than 10 minutes to trim an overgrown shrub.

For trees -- take the pole saw, and lop off the low hanging limbs and branches and anything that looks like a dead branch/limb.  The tree is much healthier that way too.

For lawns -- take the garden hose and lay it out where you want to create . . . anything.  A path, a curve, whatever.  Take a hoe, or shovel and dig the old grass out.  I do not use chemicals in my yard anymore.  I dislike poison of any kind going in to me, my pets or the earth.  After the sod you don't want is removed, put a grass barrier in place.  This will help the grass and/or weeds from growing back, naturally.  HINT:  Newspaper.  Just put newspaper down if you don't want to buy a barrier.  Moisten it so it won't fly away.  This will naturally retard and prevent unwanted growth just as well.  Cover it all up with bark dust, pea gravel, whatever you like.

Once the new design is made with the lawn, the trees, bushes and shrubs have had a nice hair cut . . . you can brighten up with spalshes of colored flowers, ornamental grass, etc.

Landscaping the yard yourself can be a fun weekend project. It can be inexpensive (borrow tools if you need to) and gives you a nice out of doors workout!

Buying a home that's not landscaped is a easy fix!

Those are some great tips and fun to tackle too! Seeing a project come to fruition is definitely rewarding!

You're one of those rare people who saw the value of home ownership at a very young age and now you help others to fulfill their dreams and see the potential in value. You are truly terrific!

Are you for hire?  My 1 acre yard is a complete mess due to lack of time.  I hope I make enough money this year to just pay someone to "get it done" because I could maintain, but I've lost control and I can't fix what is there now.

Great advice, Carla. Sometimes the house you want is right in front of you if you can just see through those "weeds".

I love to garden and when I see a yard that needs some help, I just want to get in there and start fixing it up!  I love your before and after pics.  And I agree - I've found that several layers of newspaper is far better than the plastic weed papers.

Hi Gene . . . unless you're my neighbor who happens to like the jungle look!  {rolling eyes}

Hey Patricia -- and planting fruit trees really will help a yard come to fruition too!  (sorry, I couldn't help myself!)  Yup, we bought on his VA benefit.  Why pay rent?  We didn't

Hi Tammy . . . I have some things I can not do in my yard, and like you, I want to save up and get it done.  Thom Abbott is a GOOD landscaper.  He and Ray had, might still have, a landscape company.

Hey Jane -- Or even a drab exterior!

Hey Francine . . . there's some trees in my neighborhood that I would love to use the pole saw on.  It would make a world of difference!  One might actually be able to see the house!  LOL

Hi Melanie -- and it's not an expensive way to do so, either.

Hey Debbie . . . just waiting for Spring!

Hi Debbie -- what a world of difference!

Hey Beth . . . it's a good tip a neighbor told me and it works great!

Hi Chris Ann -- yes, drab and semi-crappy LOL

Hey John . . . I have a few projects for my backyard, hopefully I can do them this year!

Hi Carla,

I like the ideas here you shared. A great way to perk up a weedy area or a muddy mess. Thanks for the ideas. I like family projects that that can be done without hiring contractors for.

Carla,  Nice post and some good tips.  I do agree and see this with some buyers that all they see is those weeds.  Thanks for sharing

Having been a fan or gardening since I was growing up in Germany, in my later years now I can also say it is very relaxing on top of adding value to your property.

A yard is indeed a simple fix.  Buyers need to look past the weeds and not let that stop them from making an offer.  It's really amazing how quickly you can transform an outdoor space.
