In February 2014, the Texas Association of Realtors (TAR) hosted their Winter Meetings in Austin, Texas. The keynote speaker for the opening session was Terry Watson and he gave us some great perspective on making 2014 a phenomenal year.
One of the items he spoke about briefly was "NLP" which are the automatic unconscious eye movements that are made when people are talking to you. Knowing about NLP helps you to "see" how people think.
By using NLP, you find that you may be able to tell if someone is lying to you or not.
If you are speaking with someone who is right-handed, and they look up and left when they are speaking to you they are remembering something visually. Usually this means they are telling the truth as they are remembering something from their past and retrieve that information. If they look up and right they are "constructing" something visual meaning they are probably lying to you.
Additionally, if they look left and centered, they are remembering something they heard or a sound from their past. However, if they look right and center they are constructing a sound (again possibly lying to you). If they look left and down they are remembering something they have internalized (self-talk) and if they look right and down this indicates their feelings.
There is a movie from 1998 called "The Negotiator" with Samuel L. Jackson and he talks specifically about NLP. You can watch a clip on YouTube here: http://youtu.be/Q0xqrvefO7Q
Now that I am aware of NLP, I will try to be more conscious of it no matter what I do. It's good information for dealing with people in all sorts of scenarios, not just real estate transactions. I can think of a few places this would be useful such as negotiating with a car salesman. This would be especially great with my teenagers...just don't tell them about it!
