Wheelchair Accessible Homes in Spokane
Finding a wheelchair accessible homes in Spokane Washington is certainly a consideration for Spokane residence who are wheelchair users or have family members or friends that are wheelchair users but there are also many of the features that you might find in a wheelchair accessible home that most people could benefit from either now or at some point in their life. There could be a time when a family member is using a wheelchair or is in some other way, mobility impaired. This could be temporary or it could be long term.
Here are some considerations for a wheelchair accessible home. The first and most obvious is the main entrance. It is best if the entrance is level and smooth, but that is something that would most likely be part of the house design. A wide ramp with rails will work also and that is something that can be installed later. The garage entrance having a smooth roll in access is important.
Halls and doorways need to be at least 32 inches wide. This is likely enough room to roll but probably not enough room to turn around. 36 inch doors and even wider halls are better. Room size is certainly a consideration too. After a room has large furniture in it there is often not be a lot of room left to maneuver. Floor surfaces need also to be considered. There is carpet padding that is designed especially for rolling.
Toilet height and placement are important. A standard toilet is 17 inches high whereas an ADA compliant toilet is 19 inches high. Installing a raised seat is also an option. There also needs to be adequate room around the toilet as well as grab bars.
A roll in shower is another good feature that you may find in a wheelchair accessible home in Spokane. This is probably something that would have been designed into the home or part of a major remodel. A bathtub with good access and grab bars is a very good alternative. Roll under sinks are something else to look for.
Lower counters and other kitchen modifications may be desirable. Single level living is certainly something to look for. There are some multi-level homes that will even have an elevator.
These are just a few things to consider and is not meant to be an exhaustive list.
