Does Advertising Work?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Real Estate Rev - More Leads Means More Revenue

There are so many different ideas about advertising. Some people say it's about building a brand. Others say, one form works better than another. Many get frustrated and choose to ignore it altogether. You might be shocked to hear what a legend in adverting, David Ogilvy, has to say about it. It's probably not what you think and if you are making this mistake you could be wasting your ad budget.

If you are not familiar with David Ogilvy, he is thought of by many to be one of the greatest advertisers who ever lived. His books on advertising are considered mandatory reading by all the best copywriters in the industry. He started Ogilvy & Mather from nothing and built the agency into an international power house in the advertising world.

This video is old and a little scratchy, but the content is priceless. It's called "We Sell or Else." What he says has left many Ad Execs cringing. It will definitely give you added insight. Enjoy!

Debbie, the book is called "Ogilvy on Advertising". "Confessions of an Advertising Man" is another good one, but "Ogilvy on Advertising" is recommended most. Lot's of good lessons there.

Noah, Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

Barbara, your comment reminds me of a study I read that was published by the NAR. They interviewed over 1,000 Realtors and the only thing that beat the Internet in importance was referrals and repeat business. Thanks for leaving a comment.

Larry & Sheila, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I believe in advertising too. It's the fastest most effective way to get the word out and drive business when it's done right. I learned a lot from David Ogilvy & many others have too.

Donna, Glad to share. David Ogilvy had a lot of wisdom, hope you find it helpful.

Kela, Yep, that's what we call 'old school'

Eric,  this was very thought provoking.  I also checked out a couple of the videos posted on "bigthink"....very inspiring.  They have a free 2-week trial that might be worthwhile to check out.  Sales and Marketing are such a huge part of being a successful Realtor.  We must constantly find new inspiration to re-ignite our passions personally and professionally.....really in most aspects of life this is so important.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Joan, Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience. Staying in touch with past clients is a big one.

Christine, I have not heard of "big think before, but it sounds interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

Jon, glad you liked it. David Ogilvy is a giant, others are Clayton Makepeace, Drayton Bird, John Carlton and others. What i like about these guys is they have been around and know what they are talking about. The medium has changed, but the principles remain the same. Thanks for posting.

Lisa, "Ogilvy on Advertising" is a good read and highly recommended. Thanks for posting

ERic,

Past clients are important. This reminds me of a recent experience with an unnamed cell phone company. There was a special perk for new members that came in the mail. My wife asked them about this perk and if it was available to all clients. Mind, she was already on the phone for another issue with cell service and dropped calls. She was told sorry, the incentive was for new clients only. This is great example of a company not valuing their existing client base. It will come back to bite them in the future.

Jennifer, Glad you found it interesting.

David, Here is an interesting statistic i recently read from the NAR that says- Only 18% of Realtors follow up on a monthly basis with past clients. Crazy huh?

Hi Roy, good to see you again! I agree a lot has changed, but it is mainly the medium that changed. the same principles that Claude Hopkins wrote about in 1923 in his book Scientific Advertising are still working today, especially online.

Eric, Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing the video. I agree advertising works whether it is online or direct mail . I do not advertise in newspaper anymore except for open houses and when I ask them where they heard about the open , it is either the signs or the internet. Not many  mention the newspaper.

However direct mail marketing works.

Hi Eric,

Great post and I enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing. Branding is so important as you do not want to be a "secret agent".

Hi Gita, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Tracking is really the key.

Kristin, LOL being a "secret agent" might be cools for James Bond, but not when you are trying to get more deals through the door. Thanks for commenting.

Debb, This is what can be referred to as an "oldy but goody" glad you found it informative. thanks stopping by and leaving a comment.
