Do You Have Good Tires on Your Car in tThis Weather?    Town Fair Tire

Norwalk, CT - Town Fair Tire

Norwalk, CT - Town Fair Tire

It's always a good idea to have proper tires, but in the snow and ice we have had this winter, it is crucial.   I have had semi bald tires on the front of my car, and have been avoiding driving in the bad weather.   Finally, today, Presidents' Day, I have the time, and am sitting at Town Fair Tire to get brand new tires on the front.   Actually, they shifted the backs to the front, and are placing the new on the back of the car.

I am at Town Fair Tire in Norwalk, on Main Avenue, just off of the top of the Route 7 Connector.

They have always provided us with superb tire service, and run a good service business.    Easy to get to, and easy to wait for the work to be done.

I MUST drive tomorrow, and I hear we now are getting 3-5 inches of snow.    When will this end?

Dagny, we're required to get an annual car inspection. Tires are one of the things they look at during the inspection. A must when driving in the snow.

That's a great shout out for Town Fair Tire, as well as a good reminder to check tires.  I put new ones on right before the winter started, and they really do make a huge difference.

I just bought new tires for both my wife and my car just before the winter season. I should be good for a while now without that expense.

Yes, they have good service. However, beware. Their free alignment of the front is useful for most cars. They also have a Town Faire Tire scam of sorts, too.

Before you go in, search for your car on the Internet and see what it takes to align your tires. See if it is possible to align the back tires - it is a very complicated process on many cars. If they say they can do it, ask what they do to align the back tires and see if that is what you have already found out.

I had them charge me for a "rear alignment", but on that car a rear alignment meant taking many of the brake and tire components off the car and installing shims. When they came back with my car relatively quickly, I asked what size shims they used. They answered me with the idea that they just "re-aligned" the front tires with their computer so that the rear tires were closer to being aligned. They hadn't actually done anything to the rear tire alignment and hadn't even touched the rear tires for that rear alignment process. The salesman even said we don't do that kind of alignment on the back tires.

I considered that to be a fake alignment and got my money back. One of the salesmen who was inspecting a different customer's car outside, quietly told me before I left, that the salesman I had was the store manager, and that was the manager's method of driving up the revenue of his store. The non-manager told me that the manager sold rear alignments often and that he was rarely questioned.

So the tires may be good, the installation may be fast and good, and the free front end alignment may be good. But beware of the Town Faire Tire rear alignment sales pitch, and make sure you get what you have paid for.

Good reminder - safe tires, with lots of tread, help immensely with driving safety, especially in wet and snowy conditions.

Comment #21 above makes a good point about "alignment". Tire stores don't pull that scam any more in California. I have a good tire store I go to because they have good customer service, maybe not the cheapest price, but they offer free repairs on their tires (if they can be repaired). Stay safe, Dagny.

Good to know you have a reliable tire center in town.  I pulled into a local auto shop last week to have a tire patched.  We depend on our cars to keep us on the go.

Sadly tires are on my list in the next couple of days. Probably got 80,000 out of this set. No snow or ice. Just time.

Safety first!!  Tires are one of those things that you never really think about until either a mechanic tells you about it during routine maintenance, or until it's too late and you've had an accident.

Glad you were able to get yours taken care of!!
