Ok, so what if I can CLEARLY remember the Beatles coming to the U.S. in 1964- I don't think of myself as a senior. (I don’t agree that 50 is the new 30 either, who says stuff like that, anyway?)
But, like it or not, and if we’re lucky we will all eventually reach “a golden age”. For those that are already there, or have parents that are; there are many programs and resources available for our seniors.
One of our Glacier View neighbors dropped off resource guides at The Chapel in the Pines office last week from LCOA, (Larimer County Office of Aging). A few things that caught my eye had to do with property taxes. (Information about these 2 programs was also included with our tax notices that came out the first part of this year, but are important enough to repeat, just in case you missed it.)
1. The Colorado Property Tax Deferral Program
This programs helps Seniors continue to afford to live in their home by deferring payment of their property taxes. The loan is due and payable (with interest) upon death of the tax payer or sale of the property. You must be 65 years or older, occupy the property as your primary residence & be current on prior year's taxes. Those who qualify must file an application with the County Treasurer between January 1st and April 1st, each year. Larimer County residents can find more specific information here- http://www.larimer.org/treasurer/def.htm
2. Colorado Senior Homestead Exemption
Qualifying Colorado seniors are eligible for a tax exemption on 50 percent of the first $200,000 in value of their primary residence. New Applications must be submitted to your County Assessor by July 15.
· Applicants must be 65 years or older.
· The home must be the applicant’s primary residence for the past 10 years.
Online Applications are available at http://www.Larimer.org/assessor/forms.htm under the Assessor tab, forms and publications.
Applications filed this year are for 2014 taxes payable in 2015; you do not need to file for the exemption each year, but you do need to notify the Assessor within 60 days of any disqualifying event.
For complete information on both of these programs, contact your county Treasurer (deferral program) or Assessor (homestead exemption).
In Larimer County, the Larimer County Office of Aging(LCOA) is there to help, too. LCOA has information about Housing Options, Family Care Giver Support, Transportation Services, In-Home Care and lots, lots more.

Looks like 65 is the magic age for senior tax assistance. I bet most of us never thought we'd get to be THAT old. :-)
