That Black ABS Pipe Can Snap and Leak!

Yeah, we want to believe that the black ABS drain pipe will last forever; it won’t rust and just sits in the wall right. Well not entirely right. ABS drain lines and fittings can be under some stress for a number of years due to improper strapping, sudden force, or even constant pressure to move.

These are more common than you realize, but you will not know it until it leaks. Of course, an inspection of the plumbing before the walls were closed may have help catch the problem early – before the leak had a chance to develop.

Waiting for a leak is not the way I would like to discover this problem.

There were a number of things wrong with this drain pipe Margaret, a good inspector should have gotten this one before closing up the wall.

The perfect opportunity for a couple of permanent fix options - duct tape, chewing gum (mint preferred) or just some good old caulking.

Yep, that'll do it.

Can you still buy ABS out there?  It's in older homes here, but not in the stores.

An inspector will need some experience to identify potential problems without evidence of existing problems.

Tom, we've replaced a lot of that stuff over the past few years. If our rentals have it, I get rid of it.

Good morning Tom. I know this is a good idea, but if the home is older and the walls are closed....then what?

Thought that was something about orangeburg I think they called the pipe. Not so strong. But you are right, breaks happen. Frost is one huge mover and shaker you don't want to mess with.

Tom, you answered my question on how they may break and leak. Thanks.

Hi Tom,

I find this ABS all the time. But it was not leaking either. Good find but I bet the water stains was the clear indicator of where the leak was at. Could the quakes have caused the break? Or simply old piping?

Have a nice day in Placerville.

Best, Clint McKie

Wonder how long this had been installed in the property. Have never had an issue with this type of plumbing. Something to look forward to.

Tom, I am of the belief that nothing lasts forever.  Clearly there are better pipes to use that will likely last longer than my lifetime.  Plumbing leaks and water damage are no fun!!

Tom if it wasn't inspected before the wall was installed, now one can only hope it won't break.

There was also "defective" ABS allegedly produced years ago that many people don't know about
