Chatham-Kent Still Feeling Arctic Blast!

Kent County Still Feeling Arctic Blast!

I decided to talk about our snowy, cold Kent County Winter we are having in my Weekly Blog, since that seems to be the topic of everyone's conversation these days.We certainly are having an old fashioned winter! Kent County is feeling that Arctic Blast the weathermen are referring to. Although Kent County is often referred to as the Banana Belt with its usually mild temperatures, this winter has taken a revere. I am not fond of shovelling or digging out, but I for one, am very happy. I suspect I am showing my age, but as a kid, I remember winters like this. I grew up on Prince Arthur Ave. in Chatham and street hockey, on the snowy streets most of the winter, was just the norm. Then, when our children were growing up and we lived on the Thames River, I remember clearing a rink behind the house, skating and snowmobiling along the River either into town, out to the Lighthouse for a nice wintery ride on the Thames or if we were lucky for a Perch Dinner at the Lighthouse Inn at the mouth of the Thames River.

Unfortunately, the younger generation have no recollection of those days and many think this winter is extreme. Maybe we are just getting back to the normal winters, be it Global Warming or whatever the term is. It certainly does not seem like Global warming to me! Maybe the Summer will prove me wrong and we will have a long hot summer like I aso remember.

We live on the Thames River which runs through Chatham and it is so nice to see theSnowmobiles and the Ice Fishermen out in numbers Snowmobiles along the Thames RiverIne Fisherman Along The Thames Riverenjoying themselves. Many of the Snowmobile Dealers have had skinny winter seasons in the last several years as far as sales and those who have invested in machines have had them gathering dust in their garages unless they were lucky enough to have the time to go North. We came home Sunday to see a whole group behind our houseSnowmobiles on Thames River and  machines whipping up and down. I love it and good for them!  Have Fun! You can see cars all along the road and icefisherman sitting along the ice. They must be biting! I do not see many skaters, maybe it is too cold.

My wife and I took a ride to Erieau last Sunday.Snow Covered Erieau Village I have a fondness for the quaint little village since I spent summers there as a child at my parents cottage on the Bay side. Theboats are up on dry dock,Boat on Winter Dry Dock at Erieauthe fishing fleet Fishing Fleet At Erieau Iced In for Winteris iced in and the kids are having the time of their lives on the huge snow piles. Erieau Children at PlayI have not been to Mitchell`s Bay but it will be a similar picture I am sure.  At the Bay,cars park up by the shore and the shuttle takes the fishermen out to their huts. The stores, bait shops and restaurants are enjoying the boom!

I thought, after watching the weather channel, that we were about to have a warm spell but Sunday night dispelled all that. They were forcasting snow but when we started home from visiting family in West Lorne about 9 P.M., but we were unprepared for the ferocity of the weather or the really bad driving conditions. I guess we better listen more carefully next time. The weatherman says 45 degrees by Thursday but let`s just wait and see.

It will be summer soon enough with boats out in great numbers, beach and water enthusiasts and vacationers visiting our many Area Resorts but for now let`s just enjoy the season. Boaters, which we used to be, always say at this time of year that we are half way to boating season. Enjoy the season the best you can and be carefull walking or shovelling. Let the younger folk do that chore!
