DATA: The new telecommunications cash cow!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

The new telecommunications cash cow! By Richard WeisserIt was just a few short years ago that everyone was talking about “minutes.”

The consumption of “minutes” and the breadth of the remaining stockpile were always occupying a signification portion of the frontal lobe.

Then suddenly, we all decided to stop talking. Using a device to actually speak to somebody anywhere in the world was now like having a black and white TV.

Data is now king!

The telecommunications companies picked up on the trend and now data is the premium service.

We have flip-flopped from metered minutes and unlimited data to just the opposite. Now we get unlimited minutes but pay for data in ever-decreasing quantities for the dollar.

Who cares about minutes? We don’t talk about them anymore because we don't talk period.

But that stupid video you are watching could cost you ten bucks or more!

It is sad who de-personalized communications is becoming.  The next generation doesn't even call each other.  My son texted me from the basement a few months back.  I texted him back to tell him to come to the kitchen if he has a question for me.  I guess that's better than the old method of the same conversation at 50 decibels.

Richard, and I think that many of us are totally unconscious about the cost of downloading data - or how much we are downloading.  When I'm on a wireless device, I tend to save my download moments for when I'm connected to WiFi.

I still prefer to talk, but embrace the trends.  Like Patricia, I save downloading for WiFi availability.

Eric...

Now I get a lot of messages on social media which drives me crazy because I might easily overlook them! TY.

Pat...

Everywhere I go I set the phone up for Wi-Fi. For example, I was having my car service at the dealer this morning and my iPhone automatically connected to the Wi-Fi- that I set up the last time I was there. Thanks

I still like the one on one conversation.

YOu get to hear the emotion in the voice.

So true.  My daughter (19) will not even set up a voice mail on her phone.  She never has.  She say's, "text me", and that is the best way to get a response.  I'm also coming across people in the business who tell you straight up, email me.  They don't want to talk on the phone.

Oh yes, data usage is driving me up the wall. I've got to figure out a better solution soon.

I still have limited minutes on my plan, but unlimited data.  I paid $700 for a phone to keep my unlimited data.  But hey, I use a LOT of data, not changing it ... ever.
