Then Why The Hell Did You Call Me?

I guess you face these people in pretty much any line of work, I know I've had them in real estate as well, but this is a guy who called Peacock Virtual Solutions wanting help with Social Media.

I met him at the local Realtor Association's Christmas party back in December. He is a martgage broker here in town and during our conversation, he asked about Peacock Virtual Solutions and what we did.

Then, last week, somebody came to town and put on a Facebook for Business class and this guy went to. After the class he called me in a bit of a panic, asking me to help him with a few things.

The first thing that rubbed me a little wrong, was he started by saying "what I want, is for you to just give me a few pointers and answer a couple of questions for free. Then later on, I will be more likely to do business with you."

So I answered his questions, because that is what I do, not because he said he wanted me to. I have noticed there are a couple types of people in the business and networking world. Type 1 is the person who meets you, remembers you and then calls you when they need to hire someone with your skill set. Type 2 is the person who meets you, remembers you and then wants you to give them advice, answer questions and often times even provide them with services without payment but with the illusion that they will send you referrals for the rest of their life..... uhhh yeah!

This guy is Type 2 all the way and I'm ok with that.

So during my second phone conversation with this guy, answering questions now about how to effectively use Facebook and the difference between his personal profile and his business fan page, as I explain to him that he is going to have trouble getting a lot of business out of the 30 something friends he currently has... he begins to argue with me about pretty much everything. Saying he's not willing to do this... and he doesn't want to do that...

Which caused me to ask him the question "Then why the hell did you call me?"

He went on to explain that he wanted to know how to do it but also wasn't willing to put any effort into it. Wants to know how to make it just work on autopilot (his words).

Have you guys had clients, or turned down clients like this?

Kevin- oh yes, but this person seemed to have taken it to a new high. I have a agents ask me if I'd like to stage a room or two of a house for free, and in return I'd "get to put my card there for people to see."   Your person sounds like someone who wants it but not badly enough to work for it.  Makes you wonder, huh!

Yea, this guy is just looking for any and all free advice he can get. I hate Type 2. Only when I have a great relationship with a fellow networker and seen them multiple times, will I give out the amount of advice like that.
