Ft. De Soto Park in Tierra Verde, FL presented an opportunity this past weekend to view a re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Ballast Point. The 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry depicted both Union and Confederate infantry, artillery and civilian impressions during this period. The Battle of Ballast Point took place on October 18, 1863 in Tampa. The Union raiding party arrived by ship at the present intersection of Gandy and Bayshore Boulevards and marched 14 miles up the Hillsborough River to what is now Lowry Park. The re-enactment depicted the Confederates forcing the Union soldiers to retreat to their dinghies while both sides suffered casualties.
Also on display was a civil war era campsite and an opportunity to purchase items either from or duplicated from the era. All participants were dressed in era appropriate clothing and explanations of display items, including weapons used in those days, were readily available.
