Prince William County Government May Leave You Scratching Your Head

Beware the bed bugs of the Prince William County Office ComplexIt's important to keep your finger of the pulse of local communities when you are a real estate agent.  A discussion recently about the Prince William County tax rate being higher than surrounding counties had participants in a large neighborhood Facebook group ready to grab their pitchforks and torches and run down to the next Board of Supervisors meeting.

There are multiple components to tax rates.  We do have the highest base tax rate compared to Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, but our assessments (the number the tax rate is multiplied by to get the total tax bill) are lower.  And counties like Loudoun and Fairfax, have add on taxes that increase their tax rate for specific regions, or services, in their county and make the rate very high.  It's all relative.

What I found odd, is the day of the Board of Supervisors meeting set to discuss the tax rate, a hot topic ripe for record attendance, is a Washington Post article talking about how the Prince William County Office Complex is infested with bed bugs.  I've always been a skeptic, and the timing is surely suspect.

I suppose if you plan to attend the Board of Supervisors meeting tonight at 7:30pm about the tax rates, you may want to wear a shower cap, trash bag and rubber gloves to protect yourself.  What an image, but seriously, even a skeptic like me would take precautions if attending.  But seriously, please know that a comparable home in Fairfax or Loudoun County does carry a higher tax bill than one in our own Prince William County, when all things are taken into account.

Chris Ann, I worked as an administrator in local government for over thirty years, and I know most municipal meetings can be real dozers...In this case it lends new meaning to the phrase, "Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite." I know, that was a stretch.

I always heard that if you stuck a bar of soap between the box spring and mattress and quickly lifted it, you could tell if there were bed bugs. I wonder if that's true? Or maybe the bar of soap killed the bed bugs, I don't recall. It was the talk of the town in D.C. in the fall of 1969, that I do recall. First time I ever heard of bed bugs in a public place.

Beth:  Or it could be the reason used to hike taxes.  Apparently, word is they are rampant throughout the complex.

Tom:  This is a really nice facility.  But somebody is bringing in some critters to work with them.  Just gross!

Elizabeth:  I am completely disgusted that it could even happen.  The employees are going to grocery stores, their kids are going to schools.  Man, it's probably going to infect the whole darn county if it's really bed bugs.

Hi Chris Ann~Do you know if anyone showed for the meeting?  I know I certainly wouldn't have no matter how much the tax rate "bugged" me. (Sorry, couldn't resist).

Joy:  I'm sure that there were plenty of people that didn't even know about this that did.  The real question is did anyone show up that knew?  And I think the answer is yes.  I heard some folks saying they planned on attending despite the bed bugs.

Well, that's certainly a testament to how important this issue was to people.

Joy:  That was my first thought, that it was B.S. to keep people away that would have dissenting views from what the supervisors wanted to implement.
