Prince William County Government May Leave You Scratching Your Head
It's important to keep your finger of the pulse of local communities when you are a real estate agent. A discussion recently about the Prince William County tax rate being higher than surrounding counties had participants in a large neighborhood Facebook group ready to grab their pitchforks and torches and run down to the next Board of Supervisors meeting.
There are multiple components to tax rates. We do have the highest base tax rate compared to Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, but our assessments (the number the tax rate is multiplied by to get the total tax bill) are lower. And counties like Loudoun and Fairfax, have add on taxes that increase their tax rate for specific regions, or services, in their county and make the rate very high. It's all relative.
What I found odd, is the day of the Board of Supervisors meeting set to discuss the tax rate, a hot topic ripe for record attendance, is a Washington Post article talking about how the Prince William County Office Complex is infested with bed bugs. I've always been a skeptic, and the timing is surely suspect.
I suppose if you plan to attend the Board of Supervisors meeting tonight at 7:30pm about the tax rates, you may want to wear a shower cap, trash bag and rubber gloves to protect yourself. What an image, but seriously, even a skeptic like me would take precautions if attending. But seriously, please know that a comparable home in Fairfax or Loudoun County does carry a higher tax bill than one in our own Prince William County, when all things are taken into account.
