"Are you Faithful?" My letters from the plane

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams BRE#01928262

"My Letters from the plane"...were written while I was traveling for 12 years as an international art auctioneer. I found them in my archives, and although I am now in Real estate in Temecula CA, thought they were pretty humorous any way!

"Are you Faithful?"

I am pretty sure my hairdressers favorite thing about me, is the random phone calls she receives from whatever part of the world I am in… to schedule my next appointment!

So far her proud repertoire of ‘how far clients come to see her’ include “ Monte Carlo France, Venice Italy, Bora Bora, Hong Kong and not so glamour’s Alaska to name only a few as not to bore you.  Honestly, I “place drop” and call her from these exotic locations because I know she loves it…for me its just another day at work, and I need to get my hair done the next time I’m in LA.

They say a good man is hard to find, I say a good hairdresser is even harder!

In my 10 year on again off again long distance relationship my hair was having with Hyun (my hairdresser) we saw the best of times. Hyun’s gift is doing hair! People would stop me in airports to ask who cut and colored my hair,.."Hair by Hyun" I would always say, it made me feel on top of the world!

However the glamour’s life style of travel brought with it the impossibility of getting your hair ‘touched up’ when needed.  So we did regretfully stray a few times to a new hairdresser, mainly out of pure desperation for attention!!

I would be traveling for months at time and subjected to hotel showers that have extremely high chlorine levels, add this to the 40 volume peroxide used to achieve this “natural looking blonde” and my once lovely flowing multicolored blonde hair begins to resemble ‘Chewbacca’s’ from Star Wars! Not a pretty sight.

Couple this with inch long Black roots, and oceans between your trusted hairdresser and you…. and you shake the very foundation of your relationship! They say “don’t do long distance’ it doesn’t work, no one can be faithful for that long” but you think your relationship is different!

Until one day, all alone, and too many miles apart, Chewbacca and you stray and walk into that salon and sit in another’s chair . . . . if only you could have seen what was waiting for you on the other side of that basin…you would have waited!! The damage, the uneven cut, the ‘what the hell is this?” and now you have to live with it!

One single thought runs through my head “ Hyun could fix this….but will she have me back if she knows?”

Weeks later and a humbling phone call ... Hyun waits with an open door, and a short breathed scolding, and then …. ....

           Magic!

My letter from this plane… Be Faithful! Wait!

The cheap fix only hurts you more in the end!

HA! The lengths we will go for our hair! I didn't travel the world but when we moved 2-3 hours away, I would drive to my old hair dresser and have her cut it as I just didn't trust anyone else. It took me two years to find someone I trusted in my area.

Love your graphics, lol!

A man's perspective
I so totally agree. I moved from Murrieta all the way to Temecula over 15 years ago. I still make the arduous trek all the way back to visit Max Jr at the barbershop on the north side of Murrieta. I just can imagine any other clippers cutting my hair or spending more than $14 for my haircut. Thanks for sharing :)

Cindy, love this post!  Great things come to those who wait - sometimes it's more difficult to endure the Chewbacca moments but, the MAGIC is definitely worth the wait!

This is fabulous!  A good hairdresser is invaluable and we will travel great lengths to see them and to keep them!  I am soooooo blessed that my hairdresser is my brother.  He's a very busy stylist on Newbury Street in Boston.  It's a bit more than an hour to get to him and although he doesn't charge me, it still costs me $80 in gas, tolls, tip for his assistant and parking.  We live in such different worlds, if not for my visit to the salon every 6-9 months, I would never get to see him.

Cindy, when you find a trust hair stylist, they are worth their weight in gold, and worth calls from all over the world.  Great story.
