Girls in costume, Searcy AR. Many crowns but who was the queen?

Snowed in.  It is March 3, 2014 and a Monday morning and I should be out working but the weather disagreed.  I'm stuck at home.  What could be better to do than look through old pictures and possibly reblog one that was blogged before facebook became available.

Here's one of my favorites.  Lots of lovely little girls all dressed up in their costumes for some grand occasion.  Some may also be Searcy Sleuths of today.  Some may still reside in Searcy.  But all, no doubt about it, will remember this day and perhaps one of us will tell us about the day.

And my most favorite of all is the little boy in the background watching the girls.

Well, well, well: I love this pic, too. You are right: some of the sleuths are on the float: I am sitting cross legged on the right of the pic. in the clown costume. Mary Kay VanPatten James is on the extreme left. The Queens are Mary Beth Cook Spangler (she lives in Conway) and Peggy Killough Burkett. Of course Peg lives in Searcy. Others are Jackie King, Carolyn Walker (lives in Searcy)...JoAnn Roth Cooper, Julianne Rand (Kenny's sister)....and many more I can't remember their names right now. It was a parade for Halloween...each girl was selected from her home room and then jars were put all over town for donations....the one with the most money was Queen. Mary Beth's dad had a groc. store on the court square, Peggy's the pool hall....so they got the most traffic and therefore most money! TMI?

Thanks, Anita.  I hoped you'd come through with an explanation.  I can remember the cruelty of this method of choosing a queen when I was growing up in Georgia.  My folks, having no money, could never make me the queen!  It was a little like the cruelty of being chosen last when teams were selected.  I suffered a lot as a kid!  LOL

I had totally forgotten about how the selection was made until Beth Cook Spangler, reminded me awhile ago. My dad drove a gasoline truck....there was NO WAY I could raise any money. I've recognized two more: Patsy Sutherlin and Sammye Lynn Allen. (her parent's had Allen's Bakery so she might have had a chance)....

Nice response to your post, Barbara. Too bad about the selection of Queen; not too cool or fair a system. But hey, a great photo. The little boy seems to pause long enough to enjoy the Halloween parade.
