How Specific are Keyword Phrases? You may be surprised...

I have been working on SEO for my website. As part of this work, I have identified a number of phrases I want to be found by when someone searches Google.

But the more I study how to optimize for certain keyphrases, I find that keyphrases can be very specific.

For example, if you do a Google search right now for "FHA mortgage NC", my website comes up on page one of Google. However, change that just a bit to "FHA mortgage North Carolina" and I am back on page 2.

NC and North Carolina are the same thing, yet I am found in 2 different areas with these 2 different variations.

The key here is to mix up how you sprinkle in your keyphrases. With this example I find that I need to spell out North Carolina a bit more which will help to increase my rankings that way.

Good luck with your SEO efforts! See you at the top!

You are so right, I live in Massachusetts, if I google MA, Mass, Massachusetts my ranking is all over the place, it is a bit of a pain.

It sure is one complicated program some of these search engines run.  The same is true for me even for the same phrase every few days.

The more common the keyword phrase, the less easy it is to optimize for. FHA Mortgage NC is probably a rarely used term that your site has.

Good point. I guess you would have to put yourself in the searchers shoes and ask yourself, "What key phrases would I type to find specific information."

Thanks for the tip, Good Post!

Ed ~ Thanks for the post. Great points you make. I struggle with the SEO issue - but am taking a day-long class on Internet lead generation next week, and hopefully, this will be covered.

it is that specific, it's hard to keep up with all the little nuances of keywords...but you are right..change one little work or the order of them...and you getted bumped to another page...

"FHA mortgage NC"  For this phrase to work effectively it needs to be plural! "FHA mortgages NC"   Plurals give you twice the visibility of singular.  A person searching for "mortgages" will not find you if you are using the keyword or phrase that is "mortgage."  However is a person searching for "mortgage" will be able to find you if you had used the plural.

Jim: That is a very good point many people miss. I also have found that variations of the phrase are important too.

So if I am writing about FHA Mortgages in Charlotte, I will also make sure to mention Charlotte FHA mortgages and FHA mortgage lenders in Charlotte, etc. The overall theme here is Charlotte area FHA mortgage loans and that is what Google picks up on. It also keeps your reader from going nuts! LOL

Have fun! Ed
