Try this Trick to Deter Squirrels From Devouring Bird Food at Home

For years I've been feeding birds that live in the vicinity of my home very near Byrd Park, the Fan District and Carytown in Richmond Virginia.  Unfortunately, squirrels tend to hog the food.  What's the best way to set aside food for birds without squirrels devouring so much of it?

Well, this often can be no easy task.  Perhaps some strict animal rights activists would disagree.  However, I think my method would be considered relatively humane.

Here's something you may wish to try at your home.  Make a very spicy hot paste for squirrels, and put it on the pole where the bird feeder is.  The following are the ingredients for this paste.

1) Mix equal parts of petroleum jelly and olive oil in a small bowl.

2) Add a few dashes of hot red pepper sprinkles.

3) Mix in one half tablespoon of cloves.

4) Finally add between one to two tablespoons of cayenne pepper and mix well.(Remember this concoction is for squirrel consumption only!  Birds won't be bothered by cayenne or chilli pepper paste in the vicinity.)

Apply this paste on the bird feeder pole using a spatula.  Be careful to avoid getting the paste on your hands or eyes.  Some paste recipes suggest chilli powder as an option, but cayenne pepper also does wonders.

After applying the pepper paste a few days ago, I then walked inside my home and looked out of the glass on my front door at the bird feeder.  Within just a couple minutes one squirrel soon appeared and tried to climb the pole.  The squirrel immediately bounced off the pole in surprise like touching an electric socket.  I've never seen such a response from a squirrel!

The following day I noticed only one squirrel nibbling seeds below the bird feeder instead of three of them.  Maybe that paste did its trick.  What do you think?

These two birds sat on the upstairs terrace railing at my Richmond Virginia home.

These two birds above sit perched on the balcony terrace railing at my Richmond Virginia home.

As the weather here in Richmond Virginia region turned very cold again lately, I knew that birds needed food in order to survive.  Already I leave apple peelings on the ground for squirrels, but they often go straight for the bird food and skip the peelings.

Here's another view of the same two birds.

I strongly suspect these two birds are enjoying some of the bird food from the feeder below.

Sounds like a great idea! I've got a bird feeder a friend gave me, so I'll see if I can do this...mine is not on a pole however...wonder if this concoction will bother a magnolia tree?

Good morning Andrew. Seems like a big job and I'm afraid to leave food for the birds as the cayotes and bears come for it too.

Andrew, sound like a good idea but here in Texas our squirrels are spicy little creatures and would probably love this mixture..... just kidding. Thanks for sharing.

Carol-- Thanks for your response.  I would look online before trying this paste on a magnolia tree.  It seems to me that squirrels would find a way to circumvent the paste by jumping across branches.  Hopefully there are other good options you would consider besides having your bird feeder remain on that tree.

Sheila---Thanks for your feedback.  It sounds like you're in closer proximity to the wilderness.  In your situation maybe a bird feeder isn't the best choice.  Hopefully, the birds will find plenty of food during winter elsewhere!

Bob---Thanks for your feedback, also.  Maybe Texas squirrels are used to the heat!  This paste likely won't work for every squirrel, but I've noticed that instead of three squirrels surrounding our bird feeder, there's just one squirrel that comes back.

Andrew this sounds like an idea worth trying. I will pass it on to my neighbor who always has squirrels raiding her bird feeders. Thanks!

Berni & Suzanne,

Thanks for your feedback.  This paste is relatively inexpensive to make, and I think well worth experimenting with it.  Bird feeders are made for birds and not squirrels.  Good luck!

They charge a fortune for the food with the cayenne pepper added.  I don't mind the squirrels eating a bit, but you are right, they can be hogs.

Andrew

Thanks for this advice. I have one squirrel who constantly goes over my roof and have a constant fear of him getting into the attic through the vents. This has happen to several of my neighbors and they are a huge problem once inside. I will try this to see if I can stop him. Thanks and cheers cvc

Thanks for this additional feedback above.  Unfortunately, the squirrels are back here again by the bird feeder.  More of the spicy hot paste will need to be added!
