Glass tile mosaics - Trendy or Timeless?

By
Home Stager with Home Star Staging
When updating your home think about whether your choice is "trendy or timeless".

Ask yourself, "In 5 years will this be dated or valued?"

Personally & professionally  as a home stager in North Texas I am NOT a fan of the glass tile mosaics that I'm still seeing mainly in kitchens used for backsplashes.

Everything in moderation is key!

These busy patterns often distract and clutter the field of vision and to me a backsplash shouldn't make a statement over pricey countertops, cabinets & appliances in the space. Unless the rest of the kitchen finishes are very simple & the tile is the statement piece, refrain from using this entirely as a backsplash option - use sparingly!

What are your thoughts on these tiles? Yes or No?

Karen- it took me a long time to get used to themand I like them but I have to agree with you... the  subway tile can be very distracting and too busy.  I don't know what I'd do were I remodeling my kitchen.

These tiles when paired with granite that has any movement or multiple colors becomes extremely distracting IMHO Kathy. It's better to stick with timeless & tasteful in the kitchen especially (but also know the style of your home & neighborhood)than to spend a ton of money doing then undoing something that's a trend.

Karen ~ I love subway tiles, because they're mostly solid color and larger, but these small glass tiles can detract from granite on counters.  If the counters are solid surface then they can work nicely to add some color and interest.  A small row of them inside a row of larger solid color tiles can be a nice look, too.

As I tell my clients, if you're not moving then do whatever you like :-)  When it's time to sell, let's make sure that your choices will be appealing to your target buyer.

I'm a big subway tile fan myself Maureen! For many Texas homes natural stone is also a very good & timeless choice. Yes, asking yourself "will I move or will I stay forever in this home?" is a good benchmark test to consider your personal choices.

Trendy! I like them only as an accent in less flashy neutral backsplash!

I happen to like the glass tiles you featured in your post.  Granite is inherently speckled & busy, and so I do agree that paired with any granite would be far too hectic and dizzying. However, if they are paired with a simple quartz or quartzite (like Ceasarstone) countertop (or anything that is free of veining or movement) I think you can create a very tasteful look.  The trick is to find a balance that works...

I liked these when I first saw them in the store.  But not anymore.  They are way to busy with the basic granite most people have and especially if they have veining or color variations in their tile.

I have seen the longer version with some stainless mixed in at a tile design store that were high end.  I had a client use them in her contemporary loft on a smaller scale space in the corner, she wanted to make a statement, but look classy, and it turned out beautiful... (I wish I had a pic).

But otherwise, my personal favorite is Carrara marble with subway tiles, which I don't see very often, still seeing beige tumbled marble or something similar in most homes here.

Like most trends they will be dated. Unfortunately that is how fashion works no matter if it's clothing, cars or home decor, it will change so that people will always want to spend money on the latest. It's better to stick with things that are not the latest hot items when buying big ticket or labor intensive things.

HI Karen, I do not recommend them for staging purposes as they create a very busy focal point in the listing photos and they may not be what the buyer would like. When you live in a home you do as you please, when selling, always take the neutral option. Subway tiles in a plain colour. Great  post.

Michelle beat me to it.  I would recommend subway tiles.  They are simple, classic and budget friendly.  While the above tiles are pretty, and I do love the shiny glass with the matte, they are busy and a little over done.

HI Karen, i just had this conversation with one of my clients. I think it will go out of style however if someone couldn't resist I would recommend it it in accents like... 2-3" stripe. And I agree about subway tile with Sally and Michelle.
