No matter your background, there is one time of year that everyone can be Irish and celebrate the Irish Celtic heritage that has influenced much of what it is to be American. St. Patrick’s Day will soon be here and MoCo is ready to celebrate the Shamrock, the Green and the Music of Ireland. There are several ways to celebrate this celebration filled holiday, for adults and children alike. Listed below are some of the most popular events in our area.
For the adult St. Patrick’s Day celebration, plan to check out the tent party at Dogfish Alehouse, going on all weekend from March 15- 17th. Here you can have great local beer, traditional Irish food and enjoy live music and even some outdoor games. For an authentic Irish Pub experience, Silver Spring has the place to be McGinty’s Public House. With a secluded dining room, a quaint bar with a patio and larger upper bar where you can find live bands playing, this traditional Irish pub has it all for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that for those who do plan to celebrate at our local pubs on St. Patrick’s Day, you can always tap in to WRAP's 2014 St. Patrick’s Day SoberRide program. This will be offered from 4:00 p.m. Monday, March 17 until 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 18. To receive a free cab ride home (up to a $30.00 fare), please call 800-200-8294 (TAXI).
On the lighter, more family-friendly side of St Patrick’s day, make a date to enjoy the annual Gaithersburg St. Patrick Day Parade. Hosted by the city in partnership with the Harp & Shamrock Society of Gaithersberg, The Peterson Companies and Washington Center, the 14th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the family fun for this day of Irish pride in Moco. You and your family will see Celtic dancers, bagpipers, clowns, fire trucks and more. At the end of the parade on the Lakefront Plaza, there will be live entertainment that everyone can enjoy.
