Do you run your business...or does it run you?

Do you run your business...or does it run you?

Do you run your business...or does it run you?

It's a simple question, I suppose.  Or is it?  Part of this whole Realtorin' business is supposed to be the freedom to set your own schedule.  You can handle the clients you want to handle- with no boss telling you which ones you have to handle.

But how does the theory match up with reality?  Are you setting your schedule as you'd expected you would, or does you business do it for you?  Do you have the luxury of choosing your clients as you once envisioned?

And how about working hours- back to the ol' schedule thing.  Are things working out as you'd planned- and you're able to set aside time for yourself?

I could be mistaken, but it seems like I see very few folks actually running their businesses- but I can rattle off a number of them whose businesses are running them.  And sometimes they run them into the ground.

Indeed, "running your own business" might be one of those terms that already belongs in our "good ol' days" conversations.

Do you run your business...or does it run you?

I so agree with you on this as I have been on both sides of this one.

I started out with it running me. I have learned since that the clients you skipped lunch for or missed your kids ball game never do anything. Real clients respect your boundaries. I have MORE business since I switched to that way of doing business!

Hi, Charles:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  I've seen both as well- don't mean to sound as though the only folks I know are ones who let their businesses run them!  But it does seem like the gap between the 2 sides here continues to narrow.

My 2 favorite business books are Emyth Revisited and the 4-hour Work Week. The focus on any true business is creating systems, and then putting people into those systems to run them for you. But most small business people run a "practice" instead and end up chained to the Frankenstein monster that they created instead.

Hi, Fred:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Me, too- especially back in my software engineering days.  I remember working to get BellSouth's billing systems ready for Y2K, and it was hard to believe how many different ideas folks had for things back then.  Everyone knew their way was the only way, of course.

Tie-turned-noose, trap door...I'd have taken any way out of those dang meetings I could've gotten!

...and by the way, that Y2K thing sure was a big deal, huh?  Insert eye-roll here...

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Well, that dang Sand Dollar sounds like a fine-tuned machine!  I'd figure a system of some sorts would trump the monster...

Hi, William:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  I just wonder how many have that luxury these days!
