The Thompson Okanagan is an action filled hot spot in BC's interior. The Okanagan valley hosts numerous events and festivals, and is a popular destination any season of the year. Spring is an exceptional time to check out local events, especially in Kelowna. The days are warming up, and so is the city, as tourists and residents anticipate upcoming spring festivals. Here are just a few of the great spring events that will be happening in Kelowna this year.
Jazzing It Up In The Interior
Happening April 10, 11 and 12 is the 37th annual BC Interior Jazz Festival. The three-day event hosts jazz bands, combos and combination choirs. This rare competitive festival is one of few in Western Canada. Affiliated with MusicFest Canada, the BC Interior Jazz Festival invites gold-ranked performers to attend and regularly draws crowds. Open to the public, visitors to the festival can enjoy daily performances and workshops throughout the city. The festival's feature performance often sells out, and showcases a special guest along with the Okanagan valley's finest professional players. This year the feature performance will take place on Friday April 11, and will be held at the Kelowna Community Theatre.
A Taste Of Okanagan Valley
This year marks the 20th annual Okanagan Spring Wine Festival. This event runs from May 1-11, and is a great way to experience what the Okanagan is all about. Gracious hospitality, gourmet culinary creations, and delicious wine are plentiful year round, but are showcased beautifully during the festival. Whether you stay for a day or a week, you can enjoy informative, delicious and fun events in the Kelowna area.
A Race From The Slopes To The Shore
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the RE/MAX Ski to Sea race in April. Spectators and racers have enjoyed this yearly event since 1980. Teams take on a nine-leg race that takes participants from Big White's mountain slopes to Kelowna City Park’s shores. The race spans 95 kilometers and involves alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, mountain biking, road cycling, running, and canoeing. Solo participants complete the same course, but the canoeing leg is replaced with kayaking. This event always draws a crowd, and a good opportunity to explore some of BC's picturesque natural scenery.
Family Friendly Fat Cat Festival
The Fat Cat Children's Festival has entertained and attracted families to Kelowna for 23 years. The festival is truly a community event, and is put on by volunteers and local sponsors. Each year the festival welcomes over 15 000 people to enjoy a day of fun and excitement. This year the theme for the event is inspiring creativity naturally, and the festivities will take place on June 6 and 7 at Waterfront Park. On June 6, students from around the region come to enjoy a day of entertainment, and hand-on day of fun. Coined 'Community Day', Saturday's festivities kick off with a parade that is then followed by hours of music, performers, activities and entertainment. This event has something for every member of the family, and is suitable for adults and children of all ages.
