The arbitrary wedge is sliced,
Dogmatic, deigned to be precise,
To set our pace, control our fate
And determine if we’re prompt or late.
No beast takes notice, no fowl reflects
No crawly insect genuflects,
In homage to those ticks or tocks,
Because you see, only man has clocks!
(R Weisser 2014)
Ok we have “sprung forward” and now we must face several days or weeks of internal adjustments.
It’s amazing to me that the measure of time can be so arbitrary and realigned at whim. But we live in a society that is controlled in measures that are set without our input or consent.
If technology has done anything at all, it has made the dependence on a precise increment of time even more dogmatic. Our lives are now narrowed down to fractions of a sentence.
But in fact, our submission to the rule of the clock is voluntary.
Probably because we couldn’t survive without it!
