To be successful in real estate, you must ALWAYS answer your phone.  

Or so they say.  

Why don't Realtors answer their phonesI get crap from people all the time because I sometimes miss calls.  

Sometimes my friends give me a hard time, sometimes my neighbors give me a hard time, and then there's my mom.  

She always give me a hard time about not answering my phone, God love her.  

Here's the deal...  

A good portion of my day consists of meetings with clients.  I'm usually showing homes, at listing appointments or inspections, networking with my sphere, or attending closings.  

Could you imagine me answering a phone call when I'm talking with YOU about listing and selling YOUR home?  You'd probably fire me on the spot!

I was in a closing once where the other agent got a call from a prospective client while sitting at the closing table.  She excused herself and took the call.  

You should have seen the look on her client's face after she left.  

If I remember right, she rolled her eyes and mumbled something about "great customer service."  

I hope the other agent got a huge listing out of answering that call, because I'm pretty sure she lost any referral business from her CURRENT client that she wasn't completely focused on.  

Here's my deal...  

I do miss some calls.  I have probably lost some business because of this.  

I'm 100% okay with that.  

When I am with a client, that client's needs are the only things I'm focused on.  I'm not going to put them on the backburner to take a call from somebody else.  

I'll finish up what I'm doing, and then call that person back once I'm done.  

If somebody doesn't understand that or doesn't like it, so be it.  

This is how I work.  Sometimes I miss calls...

Amanda and Jared, good points. It is impossible to answer your phone ALL the time. There are times when that is inappropriate especially when you are working with a client. Referral business is really important, it is a gauage as to how I am servicing my client base.

There are times we need to have some personal time.  If I'm catching the latest installment in The Hobbit series, I'm NOT answering the phone.  I'll call as soon as I'm in the parking lot after the movie.  If you call me after 9 p.m., I'm PROBABLY missing that call too, but you MAY get an email back from me in response to that call as long as it's not an emergency, and I find there aren't many true emergencies in real estate.  Bill

Me too!  And it's not just for appointments.  When it's past a certain hour, the phone sits on my desk to charge and I roam my home without it.  (gasp)  I am not a cell phone junkie and realized that there are very few emergencies in real estate that need my immediate attention.  If a client appreciates that and likes a well balanced agent that can work their butt off during work hours, and has a well balanced life, then they will like working with me.  I am not at the beck and call of my phone at all ours and certainly not during client appointments.

I don't answer my phone if I'm with clients or prospects. It's rude. Otherwise, I'm pretty good at answering the phone.

That is exactly what I do.  As a matter of fact, when I first meet a new client, I make a big deal out of turning my phone off so we won't be disturbed and explain to them I always answer my phone unless I am, sitting down with clients like now, or already on the phone.  If you ever get my voice mail, leave a message and I will call you back.

Jared and Amanda:  There's a time and place for everything .. and that includes phone calls.  That said, I try to take as many calls as possible at the time the phone is first ringing.  If I can't pick-up at that moment, I return the call ASAP.  Sometimes that means someone waits for a return call.  If they think they wait longer than they should, I've had to learn to live with that.  All I can do is my best and that has to suffice ...

Amen Jared! I don't answer my phone if I'm with a client. I explain that to anyone I work with upfront. If they don't understand that chances are we aren't a good fit. As long as calls are returned ASAP it doesn't bother me a bit when an agent doesn't answer.

Jared and Amanda, on my voice mail message, I tell people to leave a message and if I don't call back in an hour, I'll take them to lunch.  Not answering isn't what gets you in trouble.  It's not returning the call in a timely manner.

In addition to face to face meetings, there are some projects you just can not do well unless you turn off distractions and interuptions...   Projects such as an important marketing presentation or year end income and expense records for a property come to mind ....

I, too, do not always answer my phone. If I have the time to google the number first, I save myself from another telemarketer. If I'm with someone, they have my attention first & foremost.

Hi Jared, I would never take a call when I'm with clients, showing homes, inspections, etc. Unless I see my son calling which he only does if it's really important.

Very good points!  It's important to let the clients know and feel that they have our full attention.  Sometimes, I also miss calls but I'll make sure that I'll return the call as soon as I'm available.
