How to prevent Lock Bumping
Great article, I never heard of this but think it needs to be shared! This is definitely the type of things we, as buyers agents especially, need to know. Little things like this go a long way with our clients.
Thanks for they eye opener Steve!
I recently saw a video that was several years old from our local news station that alarmed me. They were discussing this practice called Lock Bumping. The intruders simply obtain a special key from the interenet and then they are able to with a simple technique, disable most dead bolts. What is shocking is how easy it is to bypass your current deadbolt.
This not-so-secret practice has been spreading on Youtube with many tutorials showing potential criminals how to break into someone's house. This is trouble just waiting to happen. So I decided to find information to fight against this potentially criminal practice of Lock Bumping.
This videos shows a cheap alternatiive to replacing every lock with a more expensive high security lock. As the man says, it is a simple concept but it works very well. He also says you can buy it at places like Home Depot or Lowes, so head out and find these.
This video shows an advanced lock designed to prevent bump locking. I'm sure there are other brands that have similar types of protection, it is simply a matter of searching for other similar protection. Whether the protection comes from this company or another, really does not matter as long as your homes is protected from this insidious practice.
I just did some quick searches to help people start off their search for methods that may be different than the two mentioned above, but at least it will be a strating point of the discussion. Homeowners, protect yourself by learning about and taking measures against Lock Bumping.
