Basically on the back side of the hospital, off of Highway 278 on one side and off of Gumtree Road on the other, Hilton Head Plantation is the second largest community on Hilton Head Island. After Charles Fraser developed Sea Pines as a resort he felt that the island needed a non-resort oriented community and thus Hilton Head Plantation was born. It also has its roots in a more agrarian/rural type atmosphere and was home to a farm. It is bounded by both Port Royal Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway and has four golf courses - two of which are private, one is semi-private and one is public. There are approximately 4100 homes in the community.
