Nothing Bugs Me As Much As This!

Nothing Bugs Me as Much as This!Recently Bob Stewart conducted a “Crowdsourcing” event about seller mistakes. It was great, but I realized yesterday as I was showing a townhome that he missed an important point. Bugs!

I was taking out a young couple looking for their first place. We had seen a number of townhomes and they were getting the hang of being a little bit more critical in their viewing habits. We had looked at some homes that might work in their price range and were making progress.

This unit was vacant, and I was a little concerned before we even went in, because of the eight pictures provided (our MLS allows 20), two of them included a vacuum in the picture and one included a mop. I’m guessing now those were strategically placed so we’d presume that the home was clean!

As we entered, I did see the aforementioned vacuum still lying near the front door, but right next to it was something small and dark. It was a dead bug. Not a fly. Some sort of crawling thing.

We all saw it and a collective shiver went through us! We proceeded forward, noticing the need for paint and probably new flooring throughout. Next to the half bath downstairs we saw several  pieces of clothing that upon further inspection (not close inspection) included pants and underwear. Sheesh!! You can’t make this stuff up!

We should have left then, but in the same way you continue to watch a bad horror movie…we moved forward.

As we entered the kitchen, I noticed that the linoleum was curling up in the corners—generally not a good sign. I saw some movement in the corner of my left eye. It was next to the mop that was lying on the floor. Another bug. A roach I think. But it was fast!  Then another, even faster!

My clients saw it too and the wife let out a scream! General consensus: time to go! Now! We never even got upstairs.

Call them creepy crawlers, call them dang roaches, call them anything, but please get rid of them before your property goes on the market!

What’s your experience with (shiver)…Bugs??

I don't really experience that many bugs, dead or otherwise.  I'm sure it has to do with our climate.

If there are roaches in that unit, there are roaches in all of them. :)

I almost never see bugs so I guess most sellers know to get rid of them first. I bet that made you feel creepy crawly.

Yeah, I am going to turn around and leave, with my clients.  Not going to let them get close enough to crawl on my clothing and go home with me. Nope, not going to happen.

I don't even like them when they are laying dead back on their backs... live bugs would have me lead the way out the door!

Oh my!  I would have not stepped any further than the front door and the first sight of a dead bug.  I can only imagine the horror of seeing live ones in the kitchen!  Yikes.  You have to wonder if the listing agent knows.

That is terrible Tom.  Bugs are bad news whether alive or dead.  I like your comment about having only 8 pictures when 20 are allowed.  That is a very astute observation that a newer agent might overlook.

Not unusual to find bugs this time of the year but roaches in any quantity indicate food sources that shouldn't be there.

That would be a fun feedback call: "Yes, my clients are hoping that the bugs convey!"

Tom, I showed a house last week that had rat traps set in every room of the house!  Talk about a turn-off to buyers!

Yep, that's a good reason to back slowly out of a property. We always tell our clients to have their sellers hide pet paraphernalia before we come to photograph and film a house. Maybe we should also start telling them to hide the bugs, LOL!

In my experience every city has a few listings like this, usually you find them with first time homebuyers since they are on a lower budget. Always leads to a great story to tell back in the office. And like Shannon said, the feedback call would be fun.

Silvia--It didn't take long for us to leave!

Karen--I hope that they didn't know, otherwise...

Laura--No question that shouldn't have been left that way.

Eric--Yep, it kind of all fits together.

Joe--Actually vacant when we saw it. Had to be a problem earlier.

Shannon--That's a good one!!

Sharon--Holy cow! That's unbelievable. Which is worse, seeing the rat traps or having one caught in a trap? Yikes!!

Jim--You are so right!

Stefan--Yes, that was the case here. But still...

Wow, so true. Nothing kills a showing faster than bugs. How about this?  I was showing a young couple a  home that had been vacant for awhile. There were large glue traps everywhere with various dead crawling bugs.  If that wasn't bad enough, the kicker was upstairs.  In the master bedroom there was an access door to a attic closet/storage area.  It was dark in the area, there was one of those large glue traps, and to my unbelieving eyes there was a snake and mice stuck on the glue trap. It was a small black snake, about 15 inches.  It had died, along with the two mice it was chasing, thankfully. We got the heck out of that house fast.  Goodness, if you are going to use the glue traps it is a good thought to at least maintain them. To check once in a while and make sure they are not covered in undesirable critters.

Just today I received a call from a seller in Elk Grove who was overly concerned about roaches and said her tenant told her the home had roaches. The tenant moved out. They could not find any signs of roaches. They called in a pest company who told them they couldn't find any signs of active infestation either but they found old droppings and wanted to tent the house, of all things.
