Do You Start Your Shoelaces Over Or Under?

By
Home Inspector with Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC 3380-000723

It begs the question to ask, because obviously it means something - do you start your shoelaces over or under?

That's important? you ask.  What could it possibly mean? you ask.

I was most embarrassed seeing my wife lace her new shoes the other day.  She's such a girl.

Embarrassed I tell you!

She needed new shoes to walk on the treadmill.

None of her other 30 pairs of walking/running/exercise shoes would work. Oh no!

She needed new shoes!

She's such a girl.

Not only did she need new shoes, she needed two pairs, one in black and another in white.

She's such a girl.

Watching her lace them I was disappointed.  She started under with the first course!

That's right, I said SHE STARTED UNDER   with the first course.  She's such a girl.

If you do that then the rest of the lacing has to be UNDER/OVER!  Look at that!

Everyone knows the first course should START OVER!   And from there the lacing should be OVER/UNDER!

Look at that!  Do you understand how embarrassed I would be to be seen in public walking beside that?  And she doesn't care!  She's such a girl.

Here is a close up of what I mean.  Her new shoes are on the left.  My PF Flyers are on the right.

Most incorrect on the left.                                              Most correct on the right.

Certainly this lesson could not be more clear.  The lacing is UNDER/OVER  on the left and OVER/UNDER  on the right.

Now do you see my embarrassment?  She's such a girl.

They even gave her a neat silver cover to put in the middle!  This is to demonstrate the lacing when done right.  She's such a girl.

Look at how small those shoes are!  Half the size of my shoes.  She's such a girl.

Does she care?  Not a chance!

Look at her!  Waving in mock salute!  Impudent to the end.  She's such a girl.

I'll never win this one.  But you already know that, don't you?

You know why I will never win?  Because she's such a girl.

But she does look kind of hot in that thermal image, don't you agree?  That's because she's such a girl!

Hi Jay,

Either way will work. In public though the top is always the best. But as a man I really don't care one way or another both work for me.

Have a good day in Bristow.

Best, Clint McKie

I hold too dearly to my Man Card to think either is good Clint.  Correct is correct, and incorrect is incorrect.

I'm sorry, there is no debate here.

Hi Jay,

We are on the same page here. As long as they are "White shoe laces we are all good".

Have a nice day in Bristow.

Best, Clint McKie

Ha!  When I was in high school our colors were Kelly green and white.  It was CODE to have both green and white laces in our Chucks, Clint.

We enforced the code.

Good morning Jay,

I know you are correct and hope you don't mind cooking and cleaning while you are in the doghouse.

Make yourself a great day.

My doghouse has the latest in cooking and cleaning appliances and products Raymond.

And I do that around the house too ... when I am allowed indoors.

I rarely wear sneakers anymore - just shoes, sandals, boots.  But, I believe I do mine over.

Then I can safely say you're such a Flooring Girl?

Like I am really believing you don't have 3 dozen pairs of sneakers, that you "rarely wear" anymore.

Hard to fit am I.  My real shoe size is 7 wide.  Ever tried to buy wide shoes for women?  In order to get the width, I have to buy size 8s.  Not sneakers, that's for sure.  The shoe folks believe that all women are a AAA narrow.  They're such boys.

I found an outdoor shoe store in Leesburg that has wonderfully fitting sneakers that actually fit me.  They have one of those XRay treadmills to make sure I'm walking straight.

I bought 3 expensive pairs of which, after a year, have worn only one.  I suspect that my shoes will outlive me by ages.

Well, those expensive pairs are too small for me.  You're such a girl, Lenn.

Having met my wife you know she's such a girl, too.

Always an "over" girl, never an "under". But I do wear heels most of the time now so I'd have to check myself next time I go running.

Well, we really have our differences...

Yours and your wife's shoes look good together.

One thing I noticed is that you're very observant which I think is a very important quality needed in home inspection.
