Raising Chickens is a Fun and Heathy Hobby

Raising Chickens is a Fun and Healty Hobby

Have you always wanted to raise chickens and have farm fresh eggs every morning? It is not hard to make your dreams come true.

Check with your local city or county planning department to find out if you are zoned correctly for chickens and/or roosters. They will provide you with how many chickens you can raise, how far the coop must be from your home, and other regulations. Once you know what is involved, you can build or purchase a chicken coop.

Did you know Williams-Sonoma sells 'Chicken Coops' on-line. Go to wwww.williams-sonoma.com for more ideas and very cute coops for your yard?

*If you are not zoned, for chickens give me a call as I can find you a home that is zoned correctly. Calimesa, Yucaipa, Banning, Beaumont, and Cherry Valley in CA all have areas where you can raise chickens. I would be glad to assist you in finding your dream home to garden and raise a few chickens.

That is one of the nicest chicken coops I have ever seen.

Very efficient design.

Hi, Kristin.  Thanks for the link to Williams-Sonoma!

We are in the process of building a chicken coop. For the material, I pulled the sides off an old barn, and got some rusted tin roofing from an old shed.  Our hen house will look rustic (or maybe old and beat up)...  it sure won't looks as snazzy as the one in your photo!

Kristin - I had no idea that Williams Sonoma sold chicken coops online.  I must say that is one of the most charming ones I've seen.  I understand that I can likely keep a couple chickens where I live.  I have hesitated to do so because I fear the early morning alarm clock they have might wake the neighbors.

Hi Stacey,

Me too! I have always thought it would be fun to have a few chickens running around and getting fresh eggs out of the chicken coop every day.

Fred,

I am sure building a new chicken coup is a  lot of fun. It doesn't have to be perfect and probably won't stay like that for long. We are all used to wood rot in real estate so direct sun is going to rot the coop.

Hi Myrl,

Someone was telling me recently that some chickens give eggs and do not need a rooster. Not that I know how that happens and I did not want to have the sex talk with him about chickens but it is probably true. So maybe the girls are not too noisey in the morning since there is no rooster waking them up a 4:00 am?

Hi David,

You are so funny....raising chickens can be fun but of course you have to live in the right neighborhood. I moved to a gated community in a rural area but my HOA would not allow it. I would adore having a couple of sweet chickens and I am sure they are nicer than one of my little snippy chihuahuas. Fresh eggs every morning David! Not fun?

Kristin - That's true about hens providing eggs without roosters.  However, none of those eggs are going to hatch baby chicks.

Hi Myrl,

Ah that is the secret...I knew there was some catch to the eggs without Roosters.

Patty,

I don't know but maybe just air flow or a second level for more chickens to roost.

Our local dogs and coyotes would tear that coop apart. Wonder if W-S has a heavy duty one? Might just wander by their site.

Hi Than,

It looked pretty sturdy to me but I guess those coyotes can be aggressive. Do you have chickens? I would like chickens but my HOA says no.

I live in city limits and chickens are a no go. I guess too many people have roosters, but I don't see how they could be that much worse than the neighbors on each side. Both have dogs. One dog starts howling at 9 pm and goes until.....(not sure he ever shuts up) and the other neighbor has small yappers. They yap non stop whenever they are let out for potty breaks. Normally around 10 pm and 6 am.

Yes I hate neighbors who let their dogs bark constantly.
