My Favorite Thing About Spring?

I look at this as an opportunity to really embarass myself. So, with that in mind, what is my favorite thing about Spring? Chicago Cubs baseball of course!

Yep, unfortunately I'm a diehard Cubs fan and have been my entire life. I blame my Dad who lived to within two weeks of 100 years old, and who never saw the Cubs win a World Series. He would take me to Wrigley Field in the days when the attendance might not break 1000 people! I loved it.

Wrigley Field celebrates its 100th birthday this year. If you ever get a chance to go see a game there, it's an experience you'll never forget. It's a small stadium that hasn't changed much, and if you use your imagination you can just about see Babe Ruth pointing to the center field bleachers before he hit a home run in the 1932 World Series. It was the famous "called shot". The Cubs lost that Series of course!

Every spring I can feel the excitement of a new season starting. Every team starts with the same zero wins and zero losses and on paper, each team has the same chance to win the Pennant and the World Series.

The reality is that this year the Cubs are once again projected to finish at the bottom of the standings. It's a little disappointing, but in the big scheme of things it doesn't really matter that much.

In my mind's eye I can still see my Dad wearing his Cubs hat and reminding me to bring my glove along to Wrigley for a chance at a foul ball. Hey, that's what was really important. My Dad yelling, "Go Cubs" still echoes for me.

Hi Tom~ I've never been to Wrigley, but I have a dream of visiting all the major league ball parks. Thanks for sharing your sweet memories of your Dad!

That is awesome Tom! I grew up in Southern California and I remember Dad coming home and loading all of us up and heading out to the Chavis Ravine to watch the Dodgers play ball.  It has an excitement all of it own, being in a stadium full of fans getting involved in the game.  Excellent memories for me too!

Tom, I love the way you describe Wrigley Field.  The new fields just aren't the same.

Debbie--I didn't know that you had lived in Chicago! Yep, Wrigley is a wow.

Winston--Thanks.

Evelyn--That sounds about right. I don't think baseball has the grip on families as it once did.

Pat--I've been to a few stadiums across the country. Wrigley and probably Fenway are both magical. One feels transported back in time , I guess.

Silvia--I really do, and I know memories are a blessing!

My son has taken a liking to baseball, but growing up in Central PA I think I will steer him towards The Pirates ;)

Enjoy the season!

Good for you - I think it's great you're a fan. The Cubs probably have lots of fans - Wrigley would certainly be an amazing place to watch a game.

Shannon--The Pirates are a good team right now, good idea!

Debb--Yep, long suffering Cubs fans are everywhere. The joke going around is that maybe the Cubs will do well this year because hell froze over this winter!

Tom, We were at a convention a couple of years ago and invited to a Rooftop Party and could see the game. Can you still gets the games on your TV/satellite or do you follow vicariously?

Good morning Tom. Love your passion about the game, Wrigley and the Cubs. Hopefully Theo will be able to bring the team out of its current way of playing the game and bring it back to some of it's old glory.

Sussie--Those are some great mental pictures to hang on to!

Debbie--I do get WGN on my satellite package, so I'm able to see a number of games. I've done the rooftop thing a couple of times and it's pretty crazy!

Joe--I'm guessing you may be a Red Sox fan, if not, I apologize! Theo does have a long term plan for the Cubs and I think it may actually work. Unfortunately, the fruits may not start showing up until 2015!
