I look at this as an opportunity to really embarass myself. So, with that in mind, what is my favorite thing about Spring? Chicago Cubs baseball of course!
Yep, unfortunately I'm a diehard Cubs fan and have been my entire life. I blame my Dad who lived to within two weeks of 100 years old, and who never saw the Cubs win a World Series. He would take me to Wrigley Field in the days when the attendance might not break 1000 people! I loved it.
Wrigley Field celebrates its 100th birthday this year. If you ever get a chance to go see a game there, it's an experience you'll never forget. It's a small stadium that hasn't changed much, and if you use your imagination you can just about see Babe Ruth pointing to the center field bleachers before he hit a home run in the 1932 World Series. It was the famous "called shot". The Cubs lost that Series of course!
Every spring I can feel the excitement of a new season starting. Every team starts with the same zero wins and zero losses and on paper, each team has the same chance to win the Pennant and the World Series.
The reality is that this year the Cubs are once again projected to finish at the bottom of the standings. It's a little disappointing, but in the big scheme of things it doesn't really matter that much.
In my mind's eye I can still see my Dad wearing his Cubs hat and reminding me to bring my glove along to Wrigley for a chance at a foul ball. Hey, that's what was really important. My Dad yelling, "Go Cubs" still echoes for me.
