Full Moon Over Calimesa

Full Moon over Calimesa

I was in the car (passenger) last night so I took pictures with my cell phone as the full moon was so grand. This full moon in March is called the "Crow Moon".

Full Moon over Calimesa

This is the last full moon of the winter known as Crow Moon, Worm Moon, Crust Moon, Sap Moon, Lenten Moon or Sugar Moon. The cawing of the Crows signaled that winter was finally over.

Crust Moon came from the fact the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. Sap or Sugar Moon signaled it was a time for tapping the Maple trees.

Europeans called it the Lenten Moon as the next moon in the spring is the full moon just before Easter. Worm Moon signaled that this is the last full Moon of winter.

Great photos Kristin.  Did you know, the "March Moon" is known by other names, for example the Full Worm Moon?

Good morning, Kristin -- wonderfully captured photo of the spectacular show last night.  I never knew that this particular full moon had some many different names.

Interesting traditions with the full moon over Calimesa, Kristen. Your photos turned out quite well for a cell.

Hi Bette,

I knew of Worm Moon but no I didn't know Full Worm Moon so thanks. I love all the old tribal names and they really make sense as the lunar phases signaled the climate changes for their cultivation stages. They were very smart to have figured this all out.

Hi Michael,

I know as usually their is just one name but I am guessing the spring was a great signal for growing crops to sustain their tribes. I bet this was a happy time for the native people.

Hi Tracy,

I know I thought so for being in a moving car and through the windshield too. The very last one was after I stopped at the boulevard and got out of the car so the clarity is so much better. I usually take much better photos with my EOS camera so it was fun to mix it up a little. I call these "Moving Moon Photos".
