Why Move to Carlsbad? No Snow! No Mosquitoes! No Humidity!

I’ve had several conversations recently with people who live here, as well as those considering or planning a move, about the main reasons to buy a home in Carlsbad, apart from the terrific year-round weather and the beaches.

There is a common theme…

no snow, no mosquitoes, and no humidity.

Snow on the mountains seen from Carlsbad

Oh, we get snow in the mountains in Southern California, and you can see it from many vantage points in Carlsbad. On a really clear day you can see snow at Big Bear and other distant mountains. But we don’t have to worry here about getting snow.

And if you miss it, well you can watch the weather channel, or get in your car and be in the snow in just a few hours. Trust me, most find that having been away from it for a while you just don’t miss it all that much.

As far as humidity is concerned, well, I am not a meteorologist, I can only speak from personal experience. Yes, there are some days here when Carlsbadians gripe about how humid it is. They might even mention it on the weather station.

But having lived in Boston and in Washington, DC and traveled extensively in the southeast US in the summer, I can tell you people here have no clue about what real humidity is, nor what it’s like when the temps are in the 90s and you feel like you are in a constant steam bath for days on end. I feel blessed to be away from the humidity…you will too if you move to Carlsbad.

spider web in the garden in Carlsbad

In my opinion mosquitoes are the scourge of the earth, among other critters like ticks (I personally don't like spiders, either). We see one or two now and then, but by and large we are not troubled by these nasty things.

Mosquitoes can keep you indoors in the spring and summer in New England (don’t get me started on the green flies!), and in DC, and they were not much fun in Minnesota either.

We used to joke that mosquitoes in New England come at you with buckets and sump pumps, and laughingly called them the state bird. Seriously, those suckers are big and relentless, and they travel in flocks of millions.

Maybe you like snow, mosquitoes and humidity. To each their own. But living in Carlsbad is still a fine place to be without these nuisances.

You’ll find that you’ll stop missing them pretty quickly.

Need help finding a Carlsbad home without snow, humidity or mosquitoes? I feel your pain – let me know how I can assist you!! I know what it’s like – been there, done that.

Those mosquitoes can ruin many a fishing trip or almost any activity after dark.

Smith Mountain Lake was our "fishing hold" for years.

No mosquitoes.  It's a deep water reservoir and the fluctuations in water depth daily kept mosquitoes from breeding.  No stagnant water.

Jeff, I think I'm beginning to see why you left Ohio!  We've got all those things in abundance, especially the snow part for the last few months!  Bill

Lenn - oh they ruin all kinds of things. Nice that you had a place that was mosquito-free

Kathy - yes, I though about you and that humidity and the mosquitoes, and other creepy crawlies

BLiz - oh yes, I remember that from Ohio before I moved to New England. You have REALLY been nailed with the snow and cold this year. Hope the first day of Spring tomorrow brings warmer weather

Jeff

Jeff these are all great reasons to move to Carlsbad.  As another transplant from the northeast, I know all to well how great of a post this is - I despised the humidity, hated the mosquitoes, and the snow was an inconvenience to say the least.  Now at least the snow is always fun because I have to go looking for it!
