Besides Real Estate, What are The Best Investment Options Available?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Rentec Direct Property Management Software Tenant Screening

First off, I just want to say that I feel so incredibly fortunate to be at a point in my life that I can live comfortably, pay my bills, and have some extra money to invest.  The position I have taken on at Rentec Direct propery management software and tenant screening company has allowed me more freedom to spend time with my family and do the things I need and want to do.  I'm so gracious and so happy to be exactly where I am today!

I'm bringing up the topic of investments because well, it's relevant as I've spent a portion of my afternoon today trying to determine what kind of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds I should invest in for retirement and to be blunt teasing out the details of different investment firms and options is not really something I enjoy.

I do however enjoy investing in real estate well I guess because as the name implies it's real, when you buy a home you're purchasing a tangible item something you can see and touch, and sometimes smell. I also enjoy investing in gold and silver because it is also a physical item that you can hold or touch. However, when you're investing in the stock market much of the time you're investing in some grouping of mutual funds based off of who knows what companies it just doesn't feel like I'm really in control of what is happening with my hard earned money at all. Nonetheless the real estate market is picking up here in southern OR, and in much of the country, so I doubt that I will find another rental property to purchase at this time.  I guess I need to quit procrastinating and do some serious research.

I would be open to any recommendations on the type of investment vehicles that would suit my diversification needs.

I think tax liens and precious metals are also good things to invest in.

Thanks for the advice Kevin, I hadn't heard about investing in tax liens. I'll have to look into that.

I have been contemplating the same question for sometime, as I have been totally invested in residential rental houses in a single county of NW Georgia, and having found some success investing in real estate during the Great Recession I am ready to take some money off the table. Read the "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George S. Clason it is a must read for anyone serious about investing. The stock market is a rigged game in favor of money managers, professional investors, and unfortunately inside traders so unless you happen to be one of the fore mentioned the only way I have discovered for small investors to successfully PASSIVELY participate over the long term is continuous investing in index funds such as the S&P 500 (read A Random Walk Down Wall Street). I am not a fan of precious medals as they are non-income producing assets and historically appreciate only at par with inflation. Tax liens can be profitable but require extensive time and money to obtain insurable title and physical possession, at least in Georgia, due diligence required.

Depending on your tax bracket closed-end municipal bond funds or individual municipals might be right for you. They throw off tax free income and are almost risk free if you stay over BBB rating and keep a low duration on the fund.
