It's snowing...it must be Spring Break!

Poudre R-1 schools (our School District) are on Spring Break this week.   Tuesday morning, I was driving up the snowy road toward Red Feather and remembered a snowy spring break long ago- sometime in the 1980s.  Our little front wheel drive station wagon somehow made it to Beaver Meadows Resort, along this same Red Feather Lakes road, in spite of the feet of new snow all around us.

There was so much new snow that year, the manager had to put us up in the condos rather than plow the road to the cabin that we had originally reserved.  We were thrilled to stay in the condos, discover the cross country ski trails, sit by the warm fire in the lodge and go tubing.

Thirty some years ago, there was no tow-line for the tubing hill like they have now.  We'd trudge all the way to the top of the steep hill and then just fly down to the bottom- only to get up and do it again. It was a blast and we loved every minute of it.

It was Spring break, our home in Fort Collins seemed like a million miles away, and we were having fun with our kids.

On average, March is the snowiest month in Colorado, although in some places April wins the prize!  There have been Spring Breaks with no new snow...but I remember more WITH snow than without.  So it’s no surprise, with 4 days left of spring break, that our bright blue skies today may give way to more snow this weekend!

March and April snows eventually yield to green grasses, wildflowers and warm sunny days. For me, that’s the “real spring”.

But, those warm memories of playing in the snow on Spring Break reminds me that  “Spring” comes late to the mountains…. and it makes me smile!

Mary, Just for the record I was looking at the beautiful scenery in those Aspen ads!  Those snow clad firs that line some of those Aspen ski runs are sooooooooooo beautiful!

Than, I get what you're saying!  and then there are those who think it should be snowy, with funfilled days in the snow and then warm by the fire :-)

Oh sure Bruce, it was the beauty of the trees that caught your eye-  well, they are beautiful, but I'm not buyin' it !

Mary, many of you ladies(and Joe Namath) share something in common as you are also attracted to fur.

We have spring today, but will have winter back by Tuesday... not snow, but rain and temps as low as 30 which may lead to ice patches.  I'll be happy in another two weeks when I think most of that will be behind us.

Hi Bruce, I won't even go there..as everybody has a different opinion about wearing fur...and I'll  refrain from making any fashion comment on Broadway Joe's  coat, too!

Hi Tammy, I saw that low pressure trough on the weather report...I hope you'll be back to "normal" weather soon! We had snow Tuesday morning..by noon the roads were clear.  I guess in Spring the weather changes rapidly all over the country!

Thank you for the feature VB! You are right- it's not warm every where and it's all about what you're used to or what sports you like.  I have been very cold in Vegas on New Years Eve - roasted to death outside in June and nearly froze again in the air conditioning!! but as far as I'm concerned, it's always wonderful in Vegas :-)

Hi there Sharon, well, by the time you get here it will be quite pleasant and the snow in photo ( from a cabin preview last week) will be long gone!  Happy almost Spring!

Hi, Mary...we've had a very pleasant, mostly spring like March. We do need some more of the white stuff. I hope April blesses us with more moisture.

Hi Mary,

I have always wanted to live in a state where there is 4 seasons so snow seems like a beautiful alternative and kids can get their last chance to make snowmen before it melts.

Hi Kristin, I've lived in Colorado all my life- I probably wouldn't know what to do without four seasons! You're right,  Spring Break for many, is the last hoorah for skiing and playing in the snow- thanks

Hi Anne, thanks!  I'll bet everyone who goes will have a great Spring Break in St. Pete's too.

Yeah, I hear ya, Mary. Why back in my day, I had to trudge through the snow uphill on my own two feet, dragging my flyer slide behind me on a rope in my teeth, baring cold red face to the wind, hands stuffed into my pockets for warmth, and we didn't have any stinkin' pull mechanism to transport us to the top.

Thanks Andrew, so yes, you know.  We have no big ski area very close, so where A-Basin still has something like 6 feet of packed power...we have much less in areas nearby.

Hi Joan, it is a good memory- much better to remember and smile rather than burn up with "spring fever"! <laughing>

Elizabeth I know what you're sayin'- makes the ride down that much sweeter though :-)

Mary, I actually envy you and all the snow you've gotten.  Originally from the mid-west and Chicago I'm used to snow and the four seasons...don't get much of that here in Alabama.  Anyway, Chicago had over five feet of snow this year with very low temps...I know how much of a pain it can be, but still miss it!

Hi Nick, I had to circle back to this post - so sorry to be so late.  It has been such a cold winter for many parts of the country but I didn't realize Chicago got over 5 feet of snow this year! I know what you mean about the four seasons though, I think I would miss winter and snow.  I actually love winter, but get crabby when it's windy or gray! :-)  Thanks for coming by, I appreciate it.
