Baby Gorilla Born By C-Section at San Diego Zoo in Intensive Care Unit

Last week, a San Diego's Zoo 18 year old Gorilla, Imani, was in labor with her first baby but was having complications. The San Diego Zoo Global Team determined that the fetus was at risk so they decided to perform a C-Section on the gorilla. The team of doctors included the Global Team, and a local veterinarian surgeon and a neonatal specialist from UC San Diego Medical Center.
The 4.6 female gorilla was healthy but then started having respitory difficulties. An x-ray determined she had a collasped lung and surgery was performed immediatley. The baby gorilla is resting comfortably and is being given oxygen and fluids. She is currently at the San Diego Zoo Safairi Park Intensive Care Unit. She responds to humans, grabs items with her hands and feet and her hair is growing. These are all good signs she is gaining strength and will recover.

Her mother, Imani, is located in a bedroom suite nearby and has recovered from her delivery and surgery.
This is the park's 17th gorilla but the first C-Section gorilla delivery.
